Boys basketball roundup: PT beats Jeannette, moves into title game

Connor Freely and Nick Valentic had 10 points each as Peters Township opened its season with a 44-30 victory over Jeannette at the Indians’ tip-off tournament Friday night.

The Indians (1-0), who play Seton-La Salle at 4:30 p.m. today in the championship game, led just 18-14 at the half before going on a 15-5 run in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Julian Batts led the Jayhawks (0-1) with 14 points.

McGuffey 73, Avella 51: Zach Maxwell scored 19 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as McGuffey earned a spot in its tip-off tournament championship game with a 73-51 win over Avella.

Shaun Sanders scored a team-high 21 points and added 10 rebounds, while Damian McClosky scored 14 points and Nick Haynes 10 for the Highlanders (1-0), who face Chartiers-Houston at 8 p.m.

Brandon Miller led Avella (0-1) with 15 points.

Chartiers-Houston 71, Waynesburg 49: Noah Deep had 15 points on five three-pointers to lead a balanced scoring attack as Chartiers-Houston defeated Waynesburg, 71-49, in the opening round of the McGuffey tournament.

Cameron Hanley added 13 points, Alec Ferrari 12 and A.J. Meyers 10 for the Bucs (1-0). Ferrari added 11 assists.

Mitch Wormer scored 14 points and Jason Zelaney added 10 for Waynesburg (0-1).

Bentworth 52, West Greene 51: West Greene missed a shot on an out-of-bounds play with four seconds remaining as Bentworth held on to defeat the Pioneers in a non-section game.

Damon Bakos had 17 points to lead the Bearcats (1-0), who were 14 of 21 at the free throw line.

Colton Rush had 22 points and Craig Weaver added 13 for West Greene (0-1), which made just 10-of-24 foul shots.

Ringgold 50, Mt. Pleasant 33: Nico Law had 15 points as Ringgold defeated host Mt. Pleasant, 50-33, at the Mt. Pleasant tournament.

The Rams (1-0), who play Valley at noon today to conclude the tournament, outscored Mt. Pleasant (0-1), 26-13, in the second half.

Jefferson-Morgan 59, Carmichaels 40: Senior forward Rece Henneman scored a game-high 26 points to power Jefferson-Morgan to a 59-40 victory over visiting Carmichaels in a non-section game.

Henneman, who made 11 field goals, helped J-M build leads of 29-21 at halftime and 41-28 after three quarters. Dylan Davis also had a strong game for the Rockets, scoring 13 points.

Liam Shea paced Carmichaels with 16 points and Nick Mundell followed with 11.

Keystone Oaks 73, Fort Cherry 68: Jake Morgan was one of three double-figure scorers with 24 points and Keystone Oaks sank 11 three-point field goals to defeat Fort Cherry 73-68 in the Keystone Oaks Tip-off Classic.

Mike Orosz had 19 points and Kobe Phillippe 16 for KO, which led 40-25 at halftime.

Devon Brown led Fort Chery with 20 points. Harold Baker added 15 and Justin Iskey and Jesse McKeean each scored 10. The Rangers trailed by 19 midway through the third quarter but cut it to three with a little more than a minute. to go.

Upper St. Clair 77, Monessen 55: Zach Pateras scored 21 points and Upper St. Clair made 11 three-point field goals to down Monessen, 77-55, in the Upper St. Clair tournament.

Zach Cherup scored 12 points and Andrew Wheeler chipped in with 11 for USC.

Lavalle Rush led Monessen withh 15 points. The Greyhounds play Chartiers Valley at 6 p.m. in the consolation game.
