McCloskey leads McGuffey’s rally past Montour
McGuffey trailed by 10 points in the fourth quarter, but Damian McCloskey and timely free-throw shooting lifted the Highlanders to a 59-58 come-from-behind victory over Montour in a Section 5-AAA game Tuesday night.
Montour trailed by six points at halftime, but a 19-point third quarter gave the Spartans the lead heading into the final eight minutes. McCloskey scored 10 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter and the Highlanders (1-1, 2-2) made all six of their free-throw attempts in the final eight minutes to seize a four-point lead with just seconds remaining before Montour made a buzzer-beating three to end the game trailing by one.
McGuffey was led by Shaun Sanders, who scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Nick Haynes added 12 points and Zach Maxwell added 13 rebounds with six points.
The Spartans (0-1, 0-4) had three double-digit scorers: Tyrell Eleam (16 points), Randall LaBrie (14) and K.J. Rhodes (13).
Brentwood 50, Burgettstown 44: Troy Elphinstone and Connor McWilliams combined for 24 points and Brentwood heled Burgettstown to 19 points through three quarters as the Spartans defeated the visiting Blue Devils 50-44 in Section 3-AA.
Elphinstone scored 13 points and McWilliams had 11 as Brentwood moved to 2-0 in the section and 3-2 overall. The Spartans had to hold off a late charge by Burgettstown (1-1, 2-3).
Logan Triebsch scored 17 points and Dylan Dhans had 10 for Burgettstown, which scored 25 fourth-quarter points.
Waynesburg 64, Bentworth 45: Dom Sarra led four Waynesburg players in double figures with 15 points and the Raiders defeated visiting Bentworth 64-45 in Section 4-AA.
It was the fourth win in the last five games for Waynesburg (1-1, 4-2). The Raiders took control in the first half, out5scoring the Bearcats 23-8 in the second quarter for a 39-21 lead at halftime.
Jason Zeleny scored 14 points for Waynesburg, and Travis Wilkinson and Mitch Warmen each contributed 10.
Angelo Rios-Lopez led Bentworth (0-2, 2-3) with nine points.
Beth-Center 45, West Greene 41: Beth-Center lived by the three-point shot but needed a clutch free throw in the closing seconds to help secure a 45-41 victory over visiting West Greene in a non-section game.
Brady McDonnell scored 20 points and made six of Beth-Center’s 10 three-pointers. Luke Hess followed with 10 points and three treys.
B-C (3-3) made eight of its 10 three-pointers in the first half, when it forged a 30-22 lead. West Greene (1-5) rallied in the second half and took the lead in the fourth quarter. Beth-Center, however, had a three-point lead in the final minute when Hess converted a free throw that made it a two-possession game. The Bulldogs were only 3-for-10 at the free-throw line.
Craig Weaver led West Greene with 16 points and Kyle Shough followed with 11.
Geibel 65, Mapletown 35: Kyle Toth scored 23 points and Geibel pulled away in the second half to defeat host Mapletown 65-35 in Section 3-A.
Geibel (2-0, 4-1) made six three-point field goals and helped t5he Gators turn a 25-17 halftime lead into a 47-26 lead after three quarters.
Bailey Miller followed with 19 points for Geibel and James Ewing scored 12.
Ben Boone had 17 points to lead Mapletown (0-2, 0-5).
Monessen 83, Jefferson-Morgan 32: Monessen scored 60 first-half points on its way to a 83-32 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in a Section 3-A game.
Jaden Altomore led the Greyhounds (1-0, 2-3) with a game-high 18 points. Justice Rice and Lavalle Rush both chipped in 17 points for Monessen, which led 60-24 at halftime. Noah Yartin also scored 10 points.
The Rockets (0-2, 3-2) were shut out in the fourth quarter. Senior Rece Henneman paced Jefferson-Morgan with 19 points.
Washington 82, Fort Cherry 34: Nate Swart scored 20 points and Washington outscored Fort Cherry by 29 in the first half as the Prexies defeated the Rangers, 82-34, in a Section 3-AA game.
It marked Wash High head coach Ron Faust’s first home game back with the Prexies and Swart led the charge. Jonathan Spina (15 points), Anthony Popeck (12) and Khalil Young (10) also scored in double figures for Wash High (1-1, 2-2), which held Fort Cherry to eight points in the second quarter.
Justin Iskey led the Rangers (0-2, 0-5) with nine points.
Brownsville 71, Carmichaels 48: Brownsville started fast and never let up as the Falcons defeated Carmichaels, 71-48, in Section 4-AA.
Noah Brown scored a game-high 30 points for Brownsville (2-0, 5-1), which led by 12 points at hafltime and used a 22-point fourth quarter to pull away for the win. Liam Shea’s 20 points, including 10 free throws, led the Mikes (0-1, 0-4).
South Park 69, Trinity 53: Justin Gorny and Dan Wanker combined for 42 points as South Park defeated Trinity, 69-53, in Section 5-AAA.
Gorny scored a game-high 23 points and Wanker added 19 for the Eagles (1-0, 4-1), who led by 12 at halftime.
Trinty (1-1, 2-3) scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, led by Joey Koroly’s 17 points, but South Park pulled away in the third. The Hillers made eight three-pointers in the loss.
Seton-La Salle 75, Chartiers-Houston 50:
Alec Ferrari and AJ Myers combined for 31 points, but the Bucs could not overcome a slow start in a 75-50 loss to Seton-La Salle in a Section 3-AA game.
Myers scored a team-high 17 points and Ferrari added 14 for the Bucs (0-2, 3-3), who outscored the Rebels in the fourth quarter, but trailed by 20 points at halftime. Seton-LaSalle (2-0, 5-0) was led by Christian Del Greco, who scored a game-high 22 points, and Paris Ford chipped in 10 points.
California 56, Avella 31: Kass Taylor and Tray Matthews combined for 33 points to lead California past Avella, 56-31, in a Section 3-A game.
Taylor led California with 17 points and Matthews added 16. The Trojans (2-0, 5-1) led by only three at halftime before outscoring the Eagles by 18 points in the third quarter to pull away.
Cody Dobbin scored a team-high 17 points for the Eagles (1-1, 1-4).
