Cal women remain undefeated in PSAC
California 74, Kutztown 66: Senior guard Kaitlynn Fratz scored a game-high 22 points and four other Vulcans reached double figures as California defeated Kutztown, 74-66, in a PSAC game.
Fratz sank 8 of 9 free throws and shot 50 percent from the field to lead the Vulcans (6-0, 9-1). Emma Mahady (15 points), CeCe Dixon (12), Miki Glenn (11) and Irina Kukolj (10) were the other Cal players who reached double figures. Cal trailed 33-28 at halftime before going on 17-1 run to start the final 20 minutes. The Vulcans made 18 of 27 free throws and shot 44 percent from the field. Kutztown led by as many as nine points in the first half before Cal rallied to take the lead behind a tough defensive effort. The Vulcans recorded 12 steals, blocked 14 shots and controlled the lane – outscoring Kutztown, 30-4, down low. California sank 12 free throws in the second half to pull away.
Kutztown (2-4, 3-5) was led by three 13-point scorers – Natalya Lee, Kelsey Watson and Advia Campbell. The Vulcans have won five in a row and nine of their last 10. They entered the game ranked No. 23 in the latest USA Today Top 25 poll.
Men
Kutztown 69, California 49: California shot just 26 percent from the field as Kutztown rolled to a 69-49 victory in PSAC play.
Josh Johnson led the Golden Bears with 15 points, while Tracy Pearl Jr. and Tyler Brooks both scored 12 points. Kutztown (5-1, 8-3) led by 10 points at halftime and only trailed once in the opening minutes of the game.
Kutztown shot 53 percent from the field, blocked 22 shots and had 16 steals. Khalil Jabbie and Richard Smith both scored 12 points for California (3-3, 7-4), which drew to within six points with just over 16 minutes remaining, but the Golden Bears responded with an 11-1 run to pull way for the victory. The Vulcans missed nine three-point attempts and were just 8 for 30 from the field in the second half.
In comparison, Kutztown shot 57 percent in the second half and scored 14 poitns off turnovers.
