Girls basketball roundup: Bentworth wins on buzzer-beating 3-pointer
Morgan Vickless hit a three-point field goal at the buzzer to give Bentworth a thrilling 53-50 victory over Carmichaels Thursday night in a Section 4-AA game.
The game was tied, 50-50 with 7.7 seconds remaining. After a timeout, the Bearcats ran a play that got Vickless the ball at the top of the key and it found nothing but net.
Vickless had 12 points for the Bearcats (2-1, 4-2). Grace Marchezak had a game-high 20 points.
Caroline Cree scored 19 points to pace the offense for the Mikes (1-1, 2-4).
Jefferson-Morgan 44, Geibel 29: Jefferson-Morgan played strong at the end of each half to come away with a 44-29 victory over Geibel in a Section 3-A game to remain unbeaten.
Kayla Yorko tossed in 19 points for the Rockets (3-0, 7-0), who outscored the Gators 13-6 in the second quarter and 15-6 in the fourth.
Canon-McMillan 73, Moon 57: Danielle Parker and Rebecca Turney combined for 39 points and Canon-McMillan remained undefeated in Section 4-AAAA with a 73-57 victory over visiting Moon.
The win was the fifth in a row for the Big Macs (3-0, 5-1), who are tied for first place in the section with Mt. Lebanon.
Parker scored a game-high 20 points and Turney had 19, including 12 in the first half when C-M forged a 39-28 lead. Freshman Isabelle Allen came off the bench and scored all of her seven points in the first half.
Cheyenne Trest gave CV-M a third player in double figures as she tossed in 14 points.
Daeja Quick and Izzy Engle each scored 14 points to lead Moon (0-3, 1-5).
McGuffey 61, Chartiers-Houston 59: Two key turnovers, the final one with five seconds, proved costly to Chartiers-Houston in a 61-59 loss to McGuffey in a non-section game.
The Highlanders (5-1) led by two points in the final minute but missed the front end of a 1-and-1. C-H turned the ball over and fouled. McGuffey again missed the front end of a 1-and-1. The next trip down the floor, the Bucs were called for three seconds and McGuffey ran out the clock.
The game featured a shootout between McGuffey senior small forward Sammie Weiss and Chartiers-Houston freshman center Alexa Williamson. Weiss scored a game-high 33 points and Williamson had a career-high 29 points. Weiss also had 13 rebounds and six steals.
Katie Demi had 16 points for McGuffey, which trailed by two at the end of the third quarter, 47-45.
Jules Vulcano and Jada Youngblood each scored 10 for C-H.
Geibel fell to 2-2, including 1-2 in the section.
Beth-Center 42, Frazier 32: Anna Bartman and Kinlee Whited combined for 34 points to pace Beth-Center to a 42-32 win over Frazier in a Section 4-AA game.
Bartman led the way with 19 points and Whited chipped in with 15 for the Bulldogs (1-1, 2-2).
Lauren Masrowski scored 10 points for Frazier (2-1, 2-2).
California 54, Mapletown 12: Bailey Vig scored a game-high 15 points to propel California to a 54-12 victory over Mapletown in a Section 3-A game.
Lyndsey Huhn added 13 points for the Trojans (3-0, 5-1), who led 28-6 at halftime.
Abby Shipley scored four points for the Maples (2-1, 2-4).
Charleroi 58, Waynesburg 18: Four players scored in double figures to help Charleroi to a 58-18 victory over Waynesburg in a Section 4-AA game.
Sierra Short led the way with 11 points for the Cougars (2-1, 5-1). Aislyn Lee, Kaitlyn Riley and Maria Claybaugh each scored 10 points.
Celine Monica led the Raiders (0-3, 1-5) with 10 points.
Fort Cherry 32, Avella 15: A 12-1 run in the fourth quarter secured a 32-15 victory by Fort Cherry over Avella in a Section 3-A game.
Tina Bellhy and Hannah Greene each had 15 points for the Rangers (2-1, 2-3).
Brayden Tarolli led the Eagles (0-3, 1-5) with five points.
Mt. Lebanon 62, Peters Township 45: A strong second half powered Mount Lebanon to a 62-45 victory over Peters Township in a Section 4-AAAA game.
Kenzi Bushee tossed in 19 points to pace Mount Lebanon (3-0, 5-0), which outscored PT 34-20 in the final two quarters. Kate Sramac chipped in with 14 and Maura Wallace scored 12.
Madison Kerr scored a game-high 20 points for the Indians (0-3, 3-3), who trailed 28-25 at halftime.
Monessen 41, West Greene 24: It took Monessen 16 minutes to get its offense going but the Greyhounds scored 32 points in the second half and rallied for a 41-24 victory over host West Greene in Section 3-A.
West Greene (0-3, 0-7) forged a 15-9 lead at halftime before Monessen (1-2, 3-3), behind the scoring of Cara Grogan, had a big second half. Grogan finished with a game-high 16 points.
Mikhayla Post and Brittany Bonnema each scored five points for West Greene.
