California girls get back at Serra
It took almost 10 months, but the California girls team finally avenged its loss in the WPIAL Class A semifinals and did so in grand fashion.
Sophomore forward Kylie Huffman returned from injury to score nine points and senior forward Lynsey Huhn had a game-high 15 as the Trojans defeated visiting Serra Catholic, 49-41, in a non-section game Saturday afternoon.
It was the first meeting between the two since California lost to Serra Catholic, 60-40, in the semifinals at Baldwin High School.
Though the Eagles (3-4) lost five seniors from last season’s team that lost in the WPIAL championship to Vincentian Academy, they do return guard Katie Sieg, who led Serra Catholic with 15 points. California (6-1) led by nine points after 24 minutes and was outscored by just one point in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Freshman Jenna Miller chipped in nine points and Bailey Vig scored seven for the Trojans, who have won six consecutive games to assert themselves as one of the top teams in WPIAL Class A.

South Fayette 88, Vincentian Academy 84: South Fayete overcame a 17-point halftime deficit with a strong second half to force overtime, where it outlasted Vincentian, 88-84, in a non-section game at the Pittsburgh Basketball Classic at Aliquippa High School.
Brett Brumbaugh and Jack Relihan both scored 19 points for South Fayette (2-0), which trailed 46-29 at halftime. The Lions fought back with 30 points in the third quarter and 15 in the final eight minutes to force overtime, then outscored the Royals, 14-10.
Nick McKee (14 points), George Slater (10) and Jake Thomas (11) also reached double figures for South Fayette.
Vincentian (5-3) was led by Jamison Nee’s game-high 33 points. The Royals had three other double-digit scorers: Jack Monahan (18 points), Ian Taylor (13) and Zach McDonough (13).
Peters Township 67, Susan E. Wagner, N.Y. 59: Peters Township built an 11-point lead at the half and held on for a 24-19 victory over Susan E. Wagner at the KSA Tournament in Orlando, Fla.
Junior guard Nick Valentic scored a team-high 15 points for the Indians (4-4), and Kelson Marisa added 10 points. The Indians led 31-20 at halftime after a 23-point first quarter before building its lead in the third and holding on with strong free throw shooting.
Susan E. Wagner had three double-digit scorers, including Enijah Patterson’s game-high 17 points with 11 for 11 from the free throw line. Keyshawn Mason scored 16 and Adem Selimi finished with 11.
The Indians took third place in the tournament’s Black Bracket.
Fernandina Beach, Fla. 67, Canon-McMillan 56: Canon-McMillan could not overcome a rough start as it lost to Fernandina Beach, 67-56, in the Big Macs’ final game at the KSA Tournament in Orlando.
Canon-McMillan (2-4) was held to eight points in the first quarter and trailed by 13 points at the half. RJ Bell led the Big Macs with 14 points and Britton Beachy added 13.
Connellsville 65, Trinity 51: Connellsville led by 17 points at halftime behind three double-digit scorers as it defeated host Trinity, 65-51, in a non-section game.
The Falcons (2-4) were led by Avery White and Bradley Sledge, who both had 14 points. Caleb Pittsment chipped in 10 for Connellsville, which led 39-22 at halftime.
Nick Moretti had 13 points for Trinity (2-5).
