Baldwin hands C-M first section loss
Baldwin closed out the game by scoring the last 11 points, nine of which came from the free throw line, as the Highlanders handed Canon-McMillan its first Section 4-AAAA high school girls basketball loss, 54-47, Monday night.
Canon-McMillan (3-1, 6-2) led 47-43 in the game’s closing minutes but couldn’t get another shot to fall. Baldwin (3-1, 5-2) took advantage behind Lauren Gilbert’s 19 points, 10 of which came at the free throw line.
Amanda Larkin added 15 points for the Highlanders.
Danielle Parker had 13 points, while Cheyenne Trest and Rebecca Turney had 11 each for Canon-McMillan.
Beth-Center 47, Waynesburg 34: Anna Bartman’s 16 points paced Beth-Center to a 47-34 Section 4-AA win over Waynesburg.
Kinley Whited added 10 points for the Bulldogs (2-1, 3-2), who opened the game on an 11-3 run.
Kirsten Garber had 12 points to lead Waynesburg (0-4, 1-6).
Geibel Catholic 52, Mapletown 26: Kyonna McRae scored 15 points to lead Geibel Catholic to a 52-26 Section 3-A win over Mapletown.
Karly Judy added 14 points for Geibel (2-2, 3-2), which put the game away with a 17-8 third quarter.
Rachel Buchtan had seven points and 11 rebounds to lead Mapletown (2-2, 2-5).
Bishop Canevin 60, Chartiers-Houston 41: Gina Vallecorsa scored 14 of her game-high 26 points in the decisive third quarter as Bishop Canevin pulled away from Chartiers-Houston in a 60-41 Section 3-AA game.
Bishop Canevin (4-0, 5-2) took a 27-24 lead after two quarters, but went on an 18-8 run in the third quarter to pull away. Sarah Green added 13 points for the Crusaders.
Alexa Williamson had 16 points to lead the Bucs (2-1, 3-3), while Jaylynn Myers added 10 points in the losing effort.
Washington 56, Bentworth 28: Junior forward Tajah Gordon scored a game-high 19 points as Washington defeated Bentworth, 56-21, in a Section 4-AA game.
Mikala Maltony added 10 points and 10 assists for the Prexies (3-0, 4-2). Nicole Hoffman chipped in nine points, and Emmalea Beck finished with 8 points and 10 rebounds for Wash High, which led 36-6 at halftime.
Reilly Skerbetz scored 18 points for the Bearcats (2-2, 4-3).
Jefferson-Morgan 53, Avella 29: Sophomore Erin Confortini scored 18 points as Jefferson-Morgan had another dominant performance in a 53-29 victory over Avella in a Section 3-A game.
Confortini made two three-point shots to spark the Rockets’ 16-point lead at halftime. Ally Bogden added eight points and Kayla Yorko had seven for unbeaten Jefferson-Morgan (4-0, 8-0).
Brayden Tarolli had 12 points for Avella (0-4, 1-6)
McGuffey 76, Keystone Oaks 47: Sammie Weiss and Rachel Czulewicz combined for 55 points as McGuffey rolled to a 76-47 victory over Keystone Oaks in a Section 5-AAA game.
Weiss scored a game-high 33 points with 14 rebounds and Czulewicz, who hit four three-pointers, added 22 for the Highlanders (2-1, 6-1). Katie Demi added ninie points and nine assists for McGuffey, which led 47-20 at halftime.
Maryah Agurs scored 15 points for Keystone Oaks (0-4, 0-8).
Charleroi 55, Carmichaels 31: Three freshmen scored in double figures to lead Charleroi past Carmichaels, 55-31, in a Section 4-AA game.
Sierra Short led the Cougars with 15 points, while Kaitlyn Riley (14) and Aislyn Lee (11) also reached double digits. Senior Adrianna Gottheld chipped in 10 points for Charleroi (3-1, 6-1).
Charleroi led by 12 at halftime before outscoring the Mikes by 14 points in the final 16 minutes. Caroline Cree scored 15 points for Carmichaels (0-3, 3-5).
Monessen 38, Fort Cherry 26: Monessen went to the foul line 19 times in the fourth quarter and Teraee Bradford scored a game-high 21 points as the Greyhounds defeated Fort Cherry, 38-26, in Section 3-A game.
The two teams combined for 60 attempted foul shots as 45 fouls were called in a 32-minute span. The Greyhounds (2-2, 4-3) led by four points entering the fourth quarter and sank free throws in the closing minutes to seal the victory.
The Rangers (2-2, 2-5) were led by Tina Bellhy, who scored nine points.
Belle Vernon 60, Thomas Jefferson 41: Kaitlyn Slagus went over 1,000 points in her career as she scored 27 points in a 60-41 Section 4-AAA win by Belle Vernon over Thomas Jefferson.
Brie Rathway added 16 points for the Leopards (2-1, 5-2), while Paige Risley led TJ (1-3, 3-4) with 13 points.
