Turney leads C-M past West Mifflin

Rebecca Turney had 17 points and blocked seven shots to lead Canon-McMillan to a 53-43 victory over West Mifflin in a high school girls basketball game Saturday at the California University Tournament.

Danielle Parker chipped in 12 points, while Kierra King had 11 for the Big Macs (7-2), who play Carlynton at 3 p.m. today.

Alyssa Cairns had 18 points to lead West Mifflin (4-5).

McGuffey 71, OLSH 66: Sammie Weiss and Katie Demi combined for 41 points, and McGuffey held off an OLSH rally as it won, 71-66, to claim the McGuffey Holiday Tournament Championship.

Weiss scored 22 points, Demi added 19 points and Rachel Czulewicz chipped in 14. Weiss also had 10 rebounds and Demi had eight assists, while Carae Wagner scored 14 for a balanced McGuffey attack. The Highlanders (8-1) led by nine after three quarters and OLSH (7-2) drew to within five, but free throw shooting allowed McGuffey to hold on for the victory.

Heidi Langhorst had 28 points and Courtney Alexander scored 22 for OLSH.

California 69, Carmichaels 35: Lyndsey Huhn scored 18 points to lead California to a 69-35 win over Carmichaels at the Lady Trojan Classic.

Bailey Vig added 13 for the Trojans, who improved to 9-1 with the victory.

Caroline Cree led Carmichaels (3-6) with 24 points.

South Allegheny 37, Monessen 35: Abby Dranko had 18 points to lead South Allegheny past Monessen, 37-35, at the Lady Trojan Classic at California High School.

Alysa Kennedy added 16 for South Allegheny (1-9).

Cara Drogan scored 10 for Monessen (4-4).

Brownsville 51, Fort Cherry 31: Maris Seto and Madison Zimcoskey scored 14 points each as Brownsville defeated Fort Cherry, 51-31, in the consolation game of the McGuffey tournament.

Allie Seto added 12 points and Celine Smith had 11 for Brownsville (5-5).

Tina Bellhy scored 13 points and Alexis Faure added 12 for Fort Cherry (2-8).

Brentwood 52. Charleroi 37: Brentwood used a strong third quarter and two double-digit scorers to defeat Charleroi, 52-37, at the California High School Lady Trojans Holiday Classic.

The Spartans (6-2) led by three points at halftime before outscoring Charleroi by 12 points in the third qurater. Brentwood was led by Stephanie Thomas’ 15 points and Molly Huffman chipped in 13.

The Cougars (7-2) were led by Kaitlyn Riley’s game-high 16 points.

Waynesburg 52, Wilkinsburg 21: Kirsten Garber scored a game-high 21 points and Waynesburg used a 25-point first quarter to defeat Wilkinsburg, 52-21, in the consolation game of the Geibel Catholic Tournament.

Celine Monica added 17 points, while Breanna Scott was a force in the lane for Waynesburg (2-7) – grabbing 10 rebounds and scoring eight points. The Raiders led 38-5 at halftime and sealed the victory with a 10-point third quarter.

Wilkinsburg (1-9) was led by Tionte Staton’s seven points.

Boys Basketball

McGuffey 44, Carlynton 41: McGuffey used cluch free throw shooting and a strong performance by senior Damian McCloskey to defeat Carlynton, 44-41, at the Avella Tournament

The Highlanders (4-3) will face Geibel Monday at 6 p.m., while Carlynton (2-6) and Fort Cherry will play at 2 p.m.

McGuffey and the Cougars were tied, 31-31, at the end of the third quarter and the Highlanders inched out Carlynton in the closing minutes to secure the win. McCloskey had a team-high 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Freshman Chase Miller scored eight points and had 10 rebounds for McGuffey, which made 11 of 16 free throws.

Tarik Isak scored 16 poitns for Carlynton.

Beth-Center 36, Carmichaels 23: Beth-Center held off a furious rally by Carmichaels and prevailed with a 36-23 victory to win the King Coal Lions Club Tournament at Carmichaels High School.

Bradey McDonnell scored a game-high 13 points for the Bulldogs (5-5), and Tyler Ross chipped in 11 points. Beth-Center led 17-5 at halftime, but Carmichaels pulled to within two points at the end of the third quarter, but the Mikes (1-7) scored 16 fourth-quarter points to secure the victory.

Liam Shea scored eight points for Carmichaels.

Jefferson-Morgan 76, Mapletown 52: Jefferson-Morgan outscored Mapletown 42-16 in the second and third quarters en route to a 76-52 victory over the Maples in the consolation game of the King Coal Lions Club Tournament.

Rece Heneman had 37 points and Austin Clark 16 for the Rockets (6-3).

Ben Boone had 21 points and Matt Hein added 12 for the Maples (0-8).

Freedom 46, Avella 30: Brenton Harrison scored 19 points as Freedom defeated Avella, 46-30, at the Avella Tournament.

Nick Henderson added 13 points for Freedom (2-7), which plays Cornell at 8 p.m. Monday at the tournament.

Cody Dobbin had 10 points to lead Avella (1-7), which plays Burgettstown at 4 p.m. Monday.
