Boys basketball roundup: Isbell scores 29 in Wash High victory
East Fairmont (W.Va.) didn’t have an answer for Washington’s DeQauy Isbell as the senior forward scored a game-high 29 points Tuesday afternoon to power the Prexies to a 72-64 victory over the winless Bees in the EQT Classic in Bridgeport Middle School in West Virginia.
Washington (4-4) forged a 23-14 lead after one quarter and remained ahead throughout, though East Fairmont pulled to within 51-50 after three quarters. Isbell was the difference as all but one of his 29 points came on 14 field goals. Jonathan Spina followed with 17 points for the Prexies and Matt Popeck scored 14.
East Fairmont had four players score in double figures led by Mitch Gaskill with 18 points. Myles Johnson had 16 points, Brennon Vincent 14 and Andrew Slusser 13.
Washington will play in the fifth-place game at 10 a.m. today against Frankfort (W.Va.) at Bridgeport High School.
Carlynton 47, Burgettstown 44: Carlynton used the three-point shot to edge Burgettstown 47-44 in the Avella tournament.
The Cougars (4-6), who were only 1-for-2 at the free-throw line, made eight three-pointers. Tarik Isak, with 15 points, was the only player in double figures for Carlynton.
Dylan Dhans scored a game-high 18 points for Burgettstown (4-6) and Jacob Shipley had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The Blue Devils missed a three-pointer on their final possession.
South Fayette 53, Steel Valley 41: South Fayette pulled away from Steel Valley in the second half and defeated the Ironmen 53-41 to win the Blue Division at the C.J. Betters Tournament at the CCBC Dome.
The Lions improved to 4-0. No game details were available at press time.
Ringgold 56, Charleroi 47: Nico Law scored a game-high 21 points and Ringgold evened its record by defeating Charleroi 56-47 in the consolation bracket of the Charleroi tournament.
Law led three players in double figures for Ringgold (4-4). George Martin scored 12 points and Jarid Yahnite had 10.
John Arnold led Charleroi (5-5) with 12 points.
Ringgold went 1-1 in the tournament and Charleroi was 1-2.
Chartiers-Houston 99, Bentworth 69: Chartiers-Houston scored 53 points in the final 14 minutes to defeat Bentworth, 99-69, in the consolation game of the Bentworth Tournament.
AJ Myers led the Bucs with a game-high 38 points and Alec Ferrari added 23. Chartiers-Houston (5-5) led by just six points two minutes into the third quarter before piling on 53 points. The Bucs also made 22 of 38 free throws.
Bentworth (3-6) was led by three double-digit scorers: Angelo Rios-Lopez (17 points), Damon Petrola-Bakos (15) and Zach Rosker (13).
Fort Cherry 69, Avella 47: Every player scored Fort Cherry as the Rangers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 69-47 victory over Avella at Avella’s Christimas Tournament.
Devon Brown and Rob McAnany led the Rangers with 15 points each. Fort Cherry (2-8) led 35-21 at halftime before scoring 23 points in the third quarter.
Avella (1-9) was led by three double-digit scorers: Cody Dobbin (13 points), Brandon Miller (10) and C.J. Norman (10).
Laurel Highlands 88, Waynesburg 58: David Rusko and Jake Swartz combined for 40 points as Laurel Highlands defeated Waynesburg, 88-58, in a non-section game.
Rusko scored game-high 24 points and Swartz added 16 for the Mustangs (6-5), who led 49-29.
Waynesburg (5-4) had three double-digit scorers: Dom Sarra (18 points), Jason Zeleny (13) and Mitch Warman (16). Sarra also had eight rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Warman grabbed 10 rebounds.
West Greene 63, Hundred 42: Three players reached double figures to lead West Greene past Hundred, 63-42, in a non-section game.
Craig Weaver led the Pioneers with 19 points, while Kolton Rush and Bray Jackson both added 13. West Greene (3-7) led 40-17 at halftime.
Brandon Armstrong scored 22 points for Hundred (2-6).
North Allegheny 102, Monessen 63: North Allegheny used a 39-point second quarter to defeat Monessen, 102-63, in the championship game of the North Allegheny Tournament.
Cole Constantino scored a game-high 32 points for the Tigers (10-0). Four other players reached double figures: Will Sandherr (14), Curtis Aiken (13), Griffin Sestilli (13) and Keegan Phillips (12). Monessen (5-4) trailed by only three points at the end of the first quarter before North Allegheny outscored the Greyhounds, 64-32, in the following 16 minutes.
Justice Rice had 18 points for the Greyhounds.
