Doug Johnson scored 28 points and Washington & Jefferson hit some crucial free throws late in the second overtime to take a 74-68 win over Presidents Athletic Conference rival Grove City.

The Presidents (7-7, 12-11) trailed by five points with just 15 seconds remaining in regulation after a Grove City free throw. But the Wolverines missed the second, setting up a fast break layup for Tyler Haas and a potential three-point play when Grove City fouled him on the play.

Haas missed the free throw but Brett Rubin-Goldstein grabbed the offensive rebound and passed to Johnson, who sank the game-tying three to take the game into overtime.

Grove City (5-8, 8-13) took a three-point lead in the first overtime with a three-pointer but Johnson answered just 28 seconds later with a three of his own. The teams exchanged free throws down the stretch to take the game into a second overtime.

Johnson hit another three-point shot and the Presidents went 7 for 8 from the free throw line to seal the win.

Nate Bellhy joined Johnson in double figures with 17 points and Grove City was led by Mitch Marmelstein, who finished with 21 points.

Waynesburg 62, Thiel 59: Waynesburg scored six straight points to break a 50-50 tie with 4:24 remaining to play and never gave up the lead in a 62-69 win over Thiel in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

Jason Propst scored four of his 13 points for the Yellow jackets (7-7, 12-11) in the final four minutes. Christian Koroly, a Trinity graduate, scored two of his 10 points to break the 50-50 tie. B.J. Durham had 13 points.

Josh Johnson and Khari Bess each scored 14 points for the Tomcats (5-9, 8-12). Eric Mallinger added 10 points.

The Yellow Jackets shot only 34 percent from the field (21 of 62) but made six of 12 three-point attempts, including three by Durham. Thiel shot 48 percent (23 of 56) and hit 12 of 14 free throws. But Waynesburg scored 25 points off 23 turnovers.

IUP 85, California 47: Jeremy Jeffers led five Indiana scorers in double figures with 16 points and the Crimson Hawks, ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division II, cruised to an 85-47 victory over short-handed California in a PSAC West Division game at the Convocation Center.

California (4-9, 9-14) had upset IUP (10-2, 20-2) on the Crimson Hawks’ home court last month, but the Vulcans never threatened in the rematch. IUP raced to a 42-22 lead at halftime.

Brandon Norfleet, the son of former Cal standout Daryl Norfleet, scored 14 points for IUP, which shot 62 percent from the field, including 18-for-25 in the first half.

Mathis Keita scored 13 points for the Crimson Hawks, Devante Chance had 12 and Marcel Souberbielle 10.

Cal, which had only nine players in uniform, received 14 points from point guard Jake Jacubec. The Vulcans were held to only 14 field goals.

Washington & Jefferson 75, Grove City 54: Beka Bellhy scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds to propel Washington & Jefferson to a 75-54 road win over Grove City in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

Bellhy went 7-for-17 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line to spark the Presidents (10-5, 15-7). W&J led 30-24 at halftime and took control with a 15-4 run to start the second half. Valerie Dunlap, who finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, scored six during the spurt.

The Presidents’ lead did not dip below 11 and W&J led by as many as 26 points. Kara Seamon keyed the Presidents with five three-point field goals and 16 total points. She added five assists to give her 500 for her career. The Presidents shot 51 percent from the field in the second half to secure the win.

Kathryn Erbelding was the lone Grove City (5-10, 7-15) player in double figures with 14 points.

Waynesburg 80, Thiel 69: Waynesburg mounted a 20-8 run late in the first half to pull away from Thiel in an 80-69 win in a in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

Elaine Hasek led the Yellow Jackets (9-5, 11-10) with 15 points and Heather Davis added 14. Waynesburg hit 10 three-point shots in the victory and sank 20 of 23 free throws to close out the Tomcats (3-11, 4-17).

The two teams were tied 25-25 with over five minutes remaining in the first half when Hasek sparked the 20-8 run with 10 points. The Yellow Jackets received help from reserves with 37 points off the bench. The win puts Waynesburg in fourth place in the PAC. Jaclyn Watkins led Thiel with 24 points.
