Late-inning home runs help Rebellion defeat Pride
HANOVER, Md. – The Rebellion lost their first game in the organization’s history Friday, won their first game Saturday and are now on their first winning streak, albeit a modest one.
Two late-inning home runs helped send the Rebellion to their second consecutive victory, a 6-3 win Monday over the USSSA Pride in Hanover, Md.
Courtney Liddle led off the sixth with a solo blast to left field that broke a 3-3 tie, and Angeline Quiocho launched a two-run blast, also to left field, that put the Rebellion up by two runs.
The Rebellion added an insurance run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Liddle that scored Brittney Lindley.
“As a new franchise, it means a lot to make a statement,” Liddle told a reporter after the game on the winning streak. “It shows people who we are. I love to play on this team. It’s great softball.”
Sarah Pauly relieved starter Angel Bunner and pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to get the win. Pauly appeared to hurt her ankle at the end of the sixth inning but came back to finish the seventh. Pauly threw 33 pitches, only eight of them balls.
The Rebellion jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off Pride starting pitcher Danielle Lawrie. Jenn Salling had a one-out single to left field and came around on a triple by Bianca Mejia. B.B. Bates singled to drive in Mejia.
The Pride tied it in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run by catcher Kristyn Sandberg off Bunner.
The Pride regained the lead in the fifth, when Gionna DiSalvatore walked, went to second on a single by Sandberg, made it to third on a single by Madison Shipman and scored on a sacrifice fly by Amanda Kemokona.
The Rebellion then put the game away with a three-run sixth.
