Bucs pick 7 in draft
One day after using three of their first four players of the MLB Draft on high school players, the Pittsburgh Pirates turned to the collegiate ranks in rounds three through 10.
General manager Neal Huntington and the Pirates selected outfielder Jordan Luplow of Fresno State with the 100th overall pick in the third round. The 6-1, 195-pound right fielder for the Bulldogs was the second collegiate outfielder taken by Pittsburgh after it selected Connor Joe of the University of San Diego with the 39th pick.
The Pirates added Taylor Gushue in the fourth round. A switch-hitting catcher from the University of Florida, Gushue hit .320 with 49 RBI in 62 games.
Other Pittsburgh selected included outfielder Michael Suchy of Florida Golf Coast University in the fifth round. SS Tyler Eppler of Sam Houston State in the sixth round and shortstop Nelson Jorge of Puerto Rico in the seventh round.
Pitcher Austin Coley of Belmont University was selected in round eight, catcher Kevin Krause of SUNY Stony Brook in round nine and pitcher Alex McRae of Jacksonville University in the 10th round.
