FIFA banned Uruguay striker Luis Suarez from all football activities for four months Thursday for biting an opponent at the World Cup, a punishment that rules him out of the rest of the tournament and the start of the upcoming Premier League season.

The ban also covers Uruguay’s next nine international games, which goes beyond the next four months and rules him out of next year’s Copa America. FIFA also fined the Liverpool striker 100,000 Swiss francs ($112,000).

Suarez bit the shoulder of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay’s 1-0 win in the group stage, but escaped unpunished as the referee did not see the incident.

“Such behavior cannot be tolerated on any football pitch and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup, when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field,” Claudio Sulser, chairman of the FIFA disciplinary committee, said in a statement.

Uruguay fans were outraged over the ban.

“They clearly wanted to kick Suarez out of the World Cup. Uruguay is a small country that eliminated two big nations like Italy and England and it doesn’t benefit FIFA to let Uruguay continue playing,” said Juan Monzillo, 48, who listened to the news about Suarez on headphones as he tended his stand.

Uruguayans did not buy the explanation from FIFA.

“The immorality and hypocrisy of FIFA has no limits. Neither does Chiellini’s inclination for being a tattle-tale and a fink!” Luis Puig, a lawmaker for Uruguay’s ruling Broad Front coalition said on his Twitter account.

Portugal 2, Ghana 1: Cristiano Ronaldo’s first goal of the World Cup earned Portugal a 2-1 win over Ghana but couldn’t prevent his team being eliminated from the tournament along with the Africans.

Algeria 1, Russia 1: Algeria qualified for the World Cup knockout stages for the first time, with Islam Slimani’s heading in an equalizer in the 60th minute to give his team enough competition points to reach the second round.

Algeria placed second in Group H behind Belgium with four points, meaning it will meet Germany in the Round of 16.

Belguim 1, South Korea 0: Reduced to 10 men for more than half the match, Belgium still edged South Korea, 1-0, to finish on top of Group H and eliminate the last Asian team from the World Cup.

With a late goal yet again, Belgium made the difference in the 78th minute when defender Jan Vertonghen followed up a shot from teenage striker Divock Origi and tapped in the rebound.
