Wild Things win again at Lake Erie
AVON, Ohio – Stewart Ijames hit a go-ahead home run before leaving the game with an injury and the Wild Things went on to defeat the Lake Erie Crushers, 5-3, Saturday night.
Ijames’ two-run homer, his league-leading 12th of the season, gave Washington a 3-1 lead in the third inning. Washington remained in the lead for the remainder of the night and won its third consecutive game.
Lake Erie pulled to within one run at 3-2 and 4-3, but the Wild Things scored an insurance run in the seventh inning. Ijames broke up a double play attempt with a slide at second base, but he was hit in the face by the relay throw to first base. The errant throw allowed Garrett Rau to score and pushed Washington’s lead to 5-3. Ijames left the game at that point.
Chris Phelan (5-2) pitched five innings for the win and was followed on the mound by four relievers. Jonathan Kountis got the final three outs for his 15th save.
Danny Poma had three of Washington’s 10 hits and scored two runs.
Washington will try today for its first series sweep at Lake Erie.
