W&J falls in PAC title game

Less than 24 hours after breaking the NCAA Division III single-game scoring record with 63 points in a semifinal win over Waynesburg University, Thomas More’s Sydney Moss scored a game-high 29 points to lead the top-seeded Saints to their eighth consecutive Presidents’ Athletic Conference championship after defeating third-seeded Washington & Jefferson, 80-58, Saturday at the Connor Convocation Center.
Third-ranked Thomas More (28-0) started the game on a 17-7 run behind Moss, who scored 19 of her points in the first half. The Presidents made 44 percent of their shots in the first half, but Moss’s performance had W&J trailing 45-27 at the half.
With the win, Thomas More earns an automatic bid to the Division III NCAA Division III Tournament. W&J (20-8) will await word on a possible ECAC Division III Tournament bid Monday.
The Saints forced 23 turnovers, while Jenny Burgoyne (16 points) and Sydni Wainscott (10) joined Moss in double figures. Thomas More made 33 of 63 of its field-goal attempts. Moss, the PAC Player of the Year and daughter of former NFL wide receiver Randy Moss, added 11 rebounds and seven assists for the Saints.
Chelsea Apke led W&J with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Beka Bellhy added 12 points and the Presidents made 15 of 19 free throws.
W&J only got four points from its bench in the second half and Thomas More scored 44 points in the lane against the Presidents.
