Baseball: W&J splits doubleheader

Eddie Nogay scattered five hits in six innings as Washington & Jefferson College won its regular season opener, 4-2, to earn a split with Bethany in a men’s baseball Presidents’ Athletic Conference matchup.

Michael Ruffing and Nick Vento had a pair of hits each for the Presidents (1-1, 1-1) in the opener.

Juls Leto had three hits for the Bison (1-1, 1-1) in the nightcap, a 4-2 Bethany win, while California High School graduate Zac Edmiston had a double.

Ruffing and Josh Staniscia had two hits each for W&J.

• Matt Murzynski fired a two-hitter with seven strikeouts in an opening 5-0 victory as Mount Union swept a doubleheader from Waynesburg in Auburndale, Fla.

Burgettstown High School graduate Brian Resnik took the loss for the Yellow Jackets (1-3) in the opener, allowing three runs in five innings.

The Yellow Jackets also managed just two hits in the nightcap off of Gino Ceriani in a 15-1 defeat to Mount Union (9-0).

Parker Beatty took the loss for Waynesburg, allowing six runs, all earned in 2 2/3 innings.
