W&J, Waynesburg fall in ECAC tourney
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Host Catholic hit 14 of 23 three-point field goals and opened the second half on a 15-4 run to end Washington & Jefferson’s season with a 90-71 victory in the semifinals of the ECAC Division III South Women’s Basketball Tournament Saturday.
Emily Grabiak had 22 points and nine rebounds, while Michelle Desantis had 17 points for Catholic (20-6). Grabiak and Desantis combined to hit seven of 11 three-pointers.
That helped overcome a monster game by W&J’s Chelsea Apke, who was playing her final game for the Presidents (21-9). Apke had 21 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. Alexa Burzese added 14 points, while Kara Seamon and Valerie Dunlap had 11 each. Dunlap also had 10 rebounds for the Presidents, who were hurt by 20 turnovers.
W&J trailed just 43-37 at the half before Catholic’s opening run.
Catholic will face McDaniel, a 77-70 winner over Saint Vincent, in today’s final.
Men’s basketball
Hood 103, Waynesburg 75: Five players scored in double digits as Hood College defeated Waynesburg, 103-75, in the semifinals of the ECAC Division III Southwest Basketball Tournament Saturday night at Bethany.
Cameron Cook had 18 points, Reggie Daniels 17 and Matt Galloway 15 for Hood (18-10), which also got 12 points from Cade Woody and 10 from Trevor Magnuski.
Hood made 50 percent of its shots from the field, including 13 of 24 shooting from three-point range. Wood and Cook had four three-pointers each.
Trinity High School graduate Christian Koroly led Waynesburg, which finishes its season at 15-13, with 12 points.
Hood will play Juniata, a 78-59 winner over top-seeded host Bethany, at 2 p.m. today in the championship game.
