2 min read

La Roche scored 10 runs in the third inning and defeated 25th-ranked Washington & Jefferson, 13-3, in Game 1 of a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park.

The Presidents rallied to earn a split in Game 2 after Kyle Smith’s bases-clearing double in the bottom of the sixth inning helped produce a 5-3 win.

The Redhawks (6-4), who defeated a nationally ranked opponent for the second straight game, received three hits and four RBI from Brian Tougher. La Roche scored twice in the first and tacked on 10 in the third as seven consecutive batters reached base. The last time W&J gave up 10 runs in a single inning came on April 26, 2003, at Grove City.

Josh Staniscia had two hits and scored two runs for W&J in the second game, while McLain went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Joe Vita earned his first career victory after battling for six innings. He gave up three runs on six hits and struck out a pair.

Vassar scored two runs in the top of the first inning and went on to a 4-2 victory over Waynesburg in Winter Haven, Fla.

It was the season opener for Vassar. Waynesburg’s record dropped to 2-6.

Luke Carter had three hits, including a double, for Waynesburg. Nathan Mori had three singles.
