Bonaventura, Carr in D-III semifinals

Nick Carr of Washington & Jefferson and Anthony Bonaventura of Waynesburg each won two bouts and moved into the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships Friday at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Carr, a graduate of South Fayette High School and redshirt sophomore, opened the Division III tournament with a 14-6 major decision over Dylan Foley of Springfield at 165 pounds at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Carr advanced to the semifinals with a 7-5 overtime victory against Cedric Gibson of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Carr wrestles top-seeded Chris Burdge of Centenary (NJ) in the semifinals.

Bonaventura, a 174-pound senior at Waynesburg University, took an 8-3 decision from Sebastian Gardner of Concordia-Moorhead in the first round, then moved to the semis with a 4-2 decision over Ethan Ball of Coe. Bonaventura wrestles No. 3-seed Dan Schiferl of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the semis

Josh Etzel, a 157-pound senior for W&J, lost a 10-5 decision to top-seeded Nazar Kulchytskyy of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the first round. Etzel was eliminated 3-1 by Terner Gott of John Carroll in the consolation round.

Teammate David Dibenedetto, a 184-pounder, fell to Jeff Holm of Olivet, 2-1, then was eliminated after a 3-1 overtime loss to David Welch of Roger Williams College.

Two other Waynesburg senior wrestlers – Luke Lohr and Cameron Fine – were sent to the consolations after first-round losses. Lohr, a 149-pound senior, was handed an 8-5 loss to Brad Mayville of Rochester Institute of Technology. He stayed alive with a pin in 2:11 of Dylan Thorsen of The College of New Jersey.

Fine, a 184-pound senior, was pinned by eighth-seeded Josh Thomson of Messiah. He then defaulted to No. 6-seed Eric Twohey of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 6:02 and was eliminated.

Bentworth’s Gus Mizia, a 174-pound redshirt freshman from Mercyhurst, won a 5-3 decision over Josh Rodriguez of Fort Hays State in the Division II event in Cleveland. Mizia lost his quarterfinal bout, 11-4, to Adam Walters of Findlay but can still finish as high as third place.

Gus Mizia’s brother, Francis, lost his first-round bout when he was pinned in 3:46 by Ray Hall of Colorado State-Pueblo. He was later eliminated 8-4 by Derrick Weller of Lindenwood.
