Baseball: Wash High edges Charleroi

1 min read

Jordan West scored the game-winning run and Jonathan Spina pitched a complete game shutout to lead Washington past Charleroi, 1-0, in an eight-inning Section 2-AA game at Consol Energy Park.

Spina earned his fifth win of the season by allowing four hits and striking out five for Wash High (9-2, 11-4). Kurt Atkins stepped to the plate in the bottom of the eighth with two outs and runners on first and second.

Atkins hit a ground ball to the Cougars’ shortstop, who flipped the ball to second base for the force out, but it was dropped as West scored from second. The win clinched a playoff berth for the Prexies – the program’s eighth in the past nine years.

Josiah Fisher took the loss for Charleroi (6-5, 7-7) despite facing just three batters and not allowing a hit.
