College baseball: W&J knocks off Waynesburg
Washington & Jefferson scored six runs in the first two innings and cruised to an 11-6 victory over Waynesburg in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game at Ross Memorial Park Thursday.
The Presidents (19-2, 24-12), who have clinched the PAC’s regular-season title, swept the season series from Waynesburg (10-11, 14-23), which is battling for one of the four postseason tournament berths.
After Waynesburg took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, W&J scored four times in the bottom half with three of the runs coming on a bases-loaded double by Kyle McLain. Ronny Peirish followed with a run-scoring double.
Nick Vento drove in two runs in the second, and smacked an opposite-field solo home run in the Presidents’ three-run sixth inning that pushed the lead to 9-2. Vento, Peirish and Tyler Schultz each were 3-for-4 as W&J’s offense produced 17 hits.
Waynesburg scored four times in the seventh to pull to within 9-6.
Tyler Dean was the winning pitcher, going five innings. Eric Crum was 3-for-5 for Waynesburg.
