College softball: Cal wins PSAC tourney opener
Alex Sagl tossed a seven-hit shutout and struck out seven Wednesday to lead California University to a 3-0 victory over Mansfield in the PSAC playoffs in Quakertown.
Natalie Wideman went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs for Cal (31-4). Breanna Morris went 3-for-3 and drove in a run. Lyndsey Reicoff had two hits and a run, and Erica Vellacorsa scored twice.
Thursday’s schedule was plagued by rain delays. Cal’s second-round game against Bloomsburg did not start until 9:30 p.m. The Vulcans defeated the Huskies, 4-2. Cal will play either West Chester or Shippensburg in today’s 6 p.m. winner’s bracket final.
• Second-seeded Geneva scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning and advanced in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference tournament after defeating third-seeded Washington & Jefferson, 5-2, Thursday afternoon at Thomas More College.
The Presidents (22-10) defeated fourth-seeded Bethany, 3-2, in an elimination game. The Bison were edged by the host Saints 4-3 in 10 innings during the opening game of the tournament.
W&J built a 2-1 lead with a run in the first and another in the fifth. Kelsey Cunningham scored on a groundout in the first inning and Abby Cunningham drove in Courtney Roperti with a single in the fifth.
In the sixth, Laura Beck tripled in a run to tie the game, then came home on a single by Samantha Johnson to make it 3-2. Mackenzie Kemerer doubled in Johnson and was pinch-run for by Cara Sevy. She scored on a single by Brittany Clark.
Against Bethany, Jen Bahn singled in a run in the fourth and Emily Watson added a two-run single in the fifth for a 3-0 lead. Bethany made it 3-2 in the sixth when Emily Garretson doubled in a run and later scored on an error.
Krista McCartney allowed one earned run in seven innnings for the win. Chartiers-Houston graduate Kierston Conwell fell to 8-10 after allowing three runs in 4 1/3 innings.
W&J plays Thomas More 11 a.m. today.
