Baseball: Resnik pitches Waynesburg past Westminster
Brian Resnik threw a complete game and Waynesburg picked up a much-needed Presidents’ Athletic Conference victory, defeating host Westminster, 11-3, Friday afternoon.
Resnik gave up three runs in the bottom of the first inning, then threw shutout ball the rest of the way to improve his record to 8-4. Resnik walked three and struck out eight.
Waynesburg (11-11, 15-23) took the lead for good at 7-3 by scoring four runs in the seventh inning. The Yellow Jackets tacked on four more runs in the eighth.
Luke Carter drove in three runs for Waynesburg and Eric Crum had two doubles among his three hits. Brian Shorthouse’s bases-loaded single in the seventh drove in the go-ahead run.
Waynesburg enters today a half-game out of fourth place in the PAC and 1½ games behind third-place Thomas More.
Westminster is 8-13 in the PAC and 11-22 overall.
• Tyler Schultz’s two-run single in the sixth inning proved to be the difference as Washington & Jefferson defeated host Frostburg State 6-4 in a non-conference game.
The Presidents (25-12) have won six in a row and 11 of their last 12.
W&J trailed 4-3 entering the sixth but the Presidents scored three times to take the lead. Winning pitcher Tim Mulvey and reliever Kyle McLain protected the advantage by combining for five shutout innings of relief. McLain earned his 10th save.
