Staniscia, Nogay get PAC’s top honors

The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team dominated the All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference team was that was announced by the league office Tuesday.

Washington & Jefferson senior outfielder Josh Staniscia was selected as the PAC’s Most Valuable Player, and W&J senior right-hander Eddie Nogay was named the Pitcher of the Year. Staniscia and Nogay also earned spots on the All-PAC first team.

Thomas More College’s Jeff Hetzer was named the Coach of the Year.

Staniscia is the first W&J player to earn the league’s Most Valuable Player award since Jim Pasquine in 2010.

W&J’s career hits (251) leader, Staniscia surpassed the previous program record of 221, held by Pasquine.

Staniscia led the PAC in hits (58), RBI (36), triples (5) and total bases (79), was third in stolen bases (14-for-16), fifth in runs (29) and doubles (11), sixth in batting average (.389) and slugging percentage (.530) and ninth in on-base percentage (.433).

Nogay is the Pitcher of the Year for the second consecutive season. He was 6-1 this spring with a 2.50 ERA. He concluded his career with an overall record of 28-2 (37 starts) and an ERA of 2.59. His 28 career victories is the school record.

Staniscia and Nogay highlighted five W&J players chosen for the first team. The others were senior catcher Ronny Peirish, senior third baseman/pitcher Kyle McLain and freshman left fielder Nick Vento.

McLain was honored as a utility player after having solid seasons as an infielder and a relief pitcher. After an injury to W&J’s starting shortstop early in the season, McLain moved from third base to shortstop. He batted .316 and tied for seventh in the league with 47 hits. He also led the conference with 10 saves, which is the third most in NCAA Division III. McLain had a 1.08 ERA.

Peirish’s 32 RBI and four home runs each ranked fifth in the PAC, while his 14 stolen bases were fourth in the league. Vento helped solidify the W&J lineup with a .393 batting average. He was third in the league with 53 hits and second with five home runs.

W&J senior right fielder Derek McIlvaine and senior right-handed pitcher Brian O’Neill were second-team selections. Senior first baseman D.J. Michalski, infielder Kyle Smith, senior first baseman Tyler Schultz and junior left-handed pitcher Hared Baird received honorable mention.

Waynesburg had five players on the all-league team including three on the first team.

Sophomore pitcher Brian Resnik, freshman designated hitter Jonathon Kletzli and junior outfielder Eric Crum picked up first-team honors, and sophomore first baseman Matt Bensinger and junior second baseman Neal Yakopin were named to the second team.

Resnik led the PAC in wins (eight) and innings pitched (85), was second in strikeouts (52) and fifth in ERA (3.28).

Kletzli led the Yellow Jackets in batting average (.383), slugging percentage (.511), on-base percentage (.465), hits (54), RBI (37) and home runs (two).

Crum enjoyed a breakout campaign, leading the PAC with 18 doubles and hitting .347.
