Things fall in opener at Florence
FLORENCE, Ky. – Kyle Bluestein drew a bases-loaded walk with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday night to give the Florence Freedom a 6-5 win over the Wild Things in the Frontier League season opener.
Washington overcame an early four-run deficit before the Freedom tied the score in the fifth inning and took advantage a three-base throwing error in the ninth to score the winning run.
Florence built a 4-0 lead on three home runs, including back-to-back shots by Jacob Tanis and Joe Staley in the third, off Washington starter Scott Dunn.
The Wild Things scored five runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead. Danny Poma started the inning with a solo homer, and Washington scored on an RBI-single by William Beckwith and a passed ball to pull to within 4-3.
Stewart Iajmes then hit a two-run homer to give the Wild Things a 5-4 lead.
Florence tied the score in the bottom of the fifth and won it in the ninth. Cole Miles started the ninth by hitting a chopper off home plate that pitcher Al Yevoli (0-1) fielded. His throw to first base was low, allowing Miles to advance all the way to third base. After two intentional walks and a strikeout, Bluestein drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch.
