Lutz’s overtime goal gives South Fayette win
Zach Lutz scored the only goal of the match two minutes into overtime to give South Fayette a 1-0 victory over Warren in a PIAA Class AA boys first-round soccer match at soggy Harbor Creek High School. The match was played in steady downpour.
The win sends South Fayette (17-4-1), the third-place team from the WPIAL, into the quarterfinals Saturday against WPIAL runner-up West Allegheny, which slipped past Bradford, 3-2.
“We went into a defensive shell in the first half because (Warren) had the wind at its back,” South Fayette coach Rob Eldridge explained. “We did a good job of defending our end. In the second half, were were able to take the momentum. We had the ball in their end of the field for about 80 percent of the second half and overtime.”
The Lions finally scored when Lutz tracked down a pass behind the Warren defense from Zach Ali and the goalkeeper.
South Fayette goalkeeper Andrew Pine made six saves – most of them in the first half – for the shutout.
