Special day for Avella senior Kusich
WILKINSBURG – Avella senior Nick Kusich did more than lead the Eagles’ rush offense against Wilkinsburg Saturday afternoon. The 5-7, 180-pound tailback accounted for over 300 total yards and scored six touchdowns to lift the Eagles to a 50-18 victory over the Tigers in a non-conference game.
The Eagles (2-3, 3-3) scored first less than seven minutes into the first quarter when senior quarterback Santino Paris connected with senior C.J. Norman on a 20-yard touchdown pass.
It was all Kusich from there.
Kusich had touchdown runs of 9, 35, 17 and 10 yards. He also returned a kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown and a punt 61 yards for a score as the Eagles led 37-6 at halftime.
Kusich finished with 18 carries for 156 yards and four rushing touchdowns with an additional 150 yards on special teams.
Wilkinsburg (1-4, 1-5) senior quarterback Jonathan Carpenter accounted for all three of the Tigers’ touchdowns. He threw a 64-yard score to Robert Higginbotham in the second quarter, had a 15-yard run in the third quarter and threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Stephon Byrd with less than 10 minutes remaining.
It was too little too late as Kuscich’s two second-half touchdowns sealed the win for Avella and snapped its two-game losing streak.
