Avella returning to football playoffs
ROGERSVILLE – Santino Paris completed 12 of 19 passes for 260 yards and five touchdowns – including a 99-yard bomb to Luke Lloyd – and Avella clinched its second consecutive WPIAL Class A playoff berth with a 62-15 victory over host West Greene Friday night in the Tri-County South Conference.
The Eagles (4-4, 5-4) clinched the final playoff berth from the conference with its win and Beth-Center’s victory over Bentworth. It’s the first time Avella has made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons since the 1970s.
Tyler Frazier got the night off to a good start for Avella by returning the opening kickoff 72 yards for a touchdown. The Eagles forged leads of 21-0 after one quarter and 35-8 at halftime.
After Dakota Umphrey’s 3-yard TD run gave Avella 14-0 lead, West Greene (0-8- 1-8) fumbled at the Avella 1-yard line and the Eagles recovered, setting up Paris’ long TD pass to Lloyd.
Paris, who surpassed 1,000 passing yards for the season, also had scoring tosses of 27 and five yards to C.J. Norman and 11 and 30 yards to Garrett Gresti.
Nick Kusich had 258 yards rushing to go over 1,000 yards for the season and had scores of four and 34 yards for Avella.
West Greene’s Owen Main had a 71-yard scoring pass to Zac Pettit, and Brey Jackson closed the swcoring with a five-yard run.
