Waynesburg’s Rohanna leads pro golf tournament
Waynesburg native Robert Rohanna and teammate Daniel Mazziotta eagled the 18th hole Saturday to pull into a tie for the lead through three rounds of the Bridgestone Americas Golf Cup tournament at Olivos Golf Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Rohanna and Mazziotta’s third-round score of 60 was the best of the day and pulled them into a tie with Puma Dominguez and Rafael Echenique, three strokes ahead of the second-place teams.
The tournament, in its first year, features 36 teams from 21 countries and includes a team on which former U.S. Open and Masters champion Angel Cabrera is competing with his son, Frederico. It is a four ball (best ball) format with a $600,000 purse.
The Cabrera team is currently in 11th place, eight strokes behind the leaders.
Most of the players, like Rohanna, are competitors on PGA Tour Latinoamerica.
America’s Golf Cup is an unofficial money event, with players’ earnings not counting towards the Order of Merit and season-long race for Web.com Tour cards.
Currently, Rohanna, a Waynesburg High School graduate, is 15th on the tour’s money list with $31,297 in earnings. The top five money leaders in the PGA Tour Latinoamerica earn automatic bids onto the Web.com Tour in 2015.
