Week 3 of the high school football season provided high drama at Wash High Stadium, a milestone reached in California and a superb individual performance in Claysville. Washington scored late then held off a Waynesburg drive with 17 seconds to play to secure a 28-20 victory in an Interstate Conference game. Beth-Center head coach Ed Woods won the 100th game of his career, 47-0, over California in a Tri-County South Conference game. James Duchi rushed for 248 yards and scored six touchdowns to push McGuffey to a 56-6 non-conference victory over Mohawk.

Elsewhere, Peters Township won its first game of the season behind quarterback Cory Owen, who produced three first-half touchdowns. Canon-McMillan, which fell to 0-3, got a strong effort from the defense and tailback Brennen Handyside, who rushed for 106 yards on 20 carries and set up two touchdowns. Trinity got into another shootout but couldn’t produce a win, falling, 33-28, to Elizabeth Forward. The Hillers lost 55-42 to Laurel Highlands the previous week.

Avella, with Santino Paris at quarterback, rolled past Jefferson-Morgan, 26-7. Paris ran for two touchdowns and threw for another. Mapletown made it two in a row with a 27-0 shutout of West Greene in the Tri-County South and Chartiers-Houston, behind the 104-yard passing of Alec Ferrari, won its first game, 21-14 over Western Beaver in a non-conference game. South Fayette scored 40 points in the first 10 minutes and rolled to a 59-20 win over South Park.
