Baseball: Waynesburg completes sweep of Thiel

Waynesburg swept a pair of games at Thiel Saturday, 7-6 and 6-4, to take all three games in the regular-season series against the Tomcats in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

Waynesburg (6-2, 8-11-1) trailed 6-1 entering the sixth inning of the opener, but scored six runs, two on an RBI double by Jonathan Kletzil, and took the lead on an RBI single by Nathan Mori.

Thiel (6-5, 16-7) led 3-2 entering the seventh inning of the nightcap, but Waynesburg scored four times in the top of the seventh, three of which came on a bases loaded double by Ben Miller, to take a 6-3 lead.

The Tomcats scored a run and had runners on second and third with no outs against freshman reliver Brandon Lawless, a Carmichaels graduate, but Derrick Zavatsky came in and recorded a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to end the game.

• Washington & Jefferson split a PAC doubleheader with Westminster, losing the opener, 7-3 in eight innings, before winning the nightcap, 10-9.

Nate McMaster was the winning pitcher in the opener for Westminster (4-7, 10-15), allowing just two earned runs in eight innings. Sean Coyle drove in three runs for the Titans.

Michael Ruffing and Ryan Sciullo had three hits each in the nightcap for W&J (4-3, 12-6), which had 14 hits in the game. Jake Haubrich homered for Westminster.

• California split a PSAC doubleheader with Indiana, losing the opener, 3-1, and winning the nightcap, 4-3, in eight innings on a walkoff homer by David Marcus.

Mike Lupia, Ryan Uhl and Rick Jones had RBI for IUP (6-8, 10-14) in the opener and Zach Chinchilla allowed just six hits and struck out seven in the win.

Justin Taylor took the loss for California (9-5, 12-13) despite allowing just two earned runs in seven innings.

Marcus also doubled and drove in two runs in the second game. Joe Yourgal also homered for California, and Cory Craig was the winning pitcher with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Trinity graduate Hunter Bigler had a pair of hits in the doubleheader for IUP, including a double in the second game. He also pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
