Brewers lose game, Braun with injury

This is far from the way Ryan Braun and the Milwaukee Brewers hoped to open the season.

The Brewers’ batters were no match for Kyle Kendrick and the Colorado Rockies, and things became even worse when Braun got injured.

Kendrick pitched seven sharp innings and also got two hits Monday as the Rockies trounced Milwaukee 10-0 Monday.

Braun, slowed by a thumb injury much of last season, left with an injury to his lower right side, Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said after the game.

The injury occurred in the fourth inning when Braun crashed into the right-field wall while making a catch of a drive by Justin Morneau. Braun was later replaced by Gerardo Parra.

“He strained his lower right side,” Roenicke said. “We’ll check and see how he is tomorrow.”

The Brewers didn’t announce the injury during the game.

It all happened during the Rockies’ four-run fourth.

“I was reaching to catch a fly ball that Justin Morneau hit in the fourth inning, and felt it a little bit,” Braun said. “With these things, you always know more the next day.”

L.A. Dodgers 6, San Diego 3: New addition Jimmy Rollins hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the eighth inning, rallying the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-3 victory over the re-tooled San Diego Padres on opening day.

Atlanta 2, Miami 1: Two Atlanta relievers combined to escape a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the seventh, and new closer Jason Grilli pitched a perfect ninth to help the Braves beat Miami 2-1 on opening day.

N.Y. Mets 3, Washington 1: Max Scherzer took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of his Washington debut but was unable to overcome two costly errors by shortstop Ian Desmond, and the New York Mets beat the Nationals 3-1 in their season opener.

Detroit 4, Minnesota 0: David Price left no doubt about his worthiness as Detroit’s opening day starter, coming within one out of a shutout in the Tigers’ 4-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

Toronto 6, N.Y. Yankees 1: Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run homer off Masahiro Tanaka, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees 6-1 Monday in Alex Rodriguez’s return to the major leagues.

Baltimore 6, Tampa Bay 2: Chris Tillman pitched into the seventh inning, and the Baltimore Orioles hit three homers while spoiling Tampa Bay’s debut under rookie manager Kevin Cash with a 6-2 victory.

Seattle 6, L.A. Angels 1: Felix Hernandez struck out 10 and allowed only two hits over seven innings, Seth Smith had three extra-base hits and two RBIs in his Seattle debut and the Mariners beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-1.

Houston 2, Cleveland 0: Dallas Keuchel and two relievers combined on a three-hitter, and the Houston Astros beat the Cleveland Indians 2-0 Monday night after being held hitless by AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber for nearly six innings.
