Baseball: Waynesburg moves into tie for PAC lead
Waynesburg swept Westminster, 14-3 and 9-3, Tuesday to win for the eighth time in its past nine games and move into a tie for first place in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.
Waynesburg, which scored 12 runs in the fifth inning of the opener, is 11-3 in the PAC and 13-12-1 overall, moving into a first-place tie with Thomas More (11-3, 19-6), which was swept in a doubleheader at Thiel.
Ben Shorthouse had four hits, including a double, and Eric Crumm had a double among his three hits and drove in three runs to back the winning pitching of Luke Carter.
Jacob Meyer allowed nine hits and three runs to get the win in the second game, and Trinity graduate Neil Yakopin homered for the Yellow Jackets. Matt Bensinger tripled for Waynesburg.
Duncan Watt and John Jones doubled for Westminster (7-11, 13-19).
• Washington & Jefferson swept at PAC doubleheader from Grove City, 5-4 and 5-0.
Kyle Smith’s RBI double in the top of the seventh broke a 4-4 tie in the opener for the Presidents (10-4, 18-7). Smith had four hits and Nick Vento had three.
Drew Landis had three hits, including a double, for Grove City (5-10, 9-16).
Riley Groves had the shuout in the second game, his second of the season, and Dan Trettel had a two-run double.
