High school softball: Trinity powers way to section lead
Olivia Gray had two of Trinity’s six extra-base hits and Paige Galentine pitched a four-hitter Tuesday as Trinity moved into sole possession of first place in Section 3-AA with a 13-3 six-inning victory over visiting West Mifflin.
The win was the fourth in a row for Trinity (5-1, 9-1), which moved a half-game ahead of second-place Belle Vernon.
Gray was 3-for-3 with two doubles, Delaney Elling was 3-for-3 with a triple and Madison Horanck went 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Hillers at the plate. Galentine, who struck out six, helped her own cause by hitting a double. Brooke Beck also doubled for Trinity.
West Mifflin is 3-4, 6-4.
• Linda Rush hit a pair of home runs as Canon-McMillan stayed unbeaten with a 12-1 six-inning win over Mt. Lebanon in Section 4-AAAA.
Caitlyn Greaves added a homer and a double for the Big Macs (5-0, 7-0), while Taylor Bruno also doubled to back the four-hit pitching of Tara Fowler.
Mt. Lebanon is 1-4, 1-5.
• Jess Cook limited Peters Township to two hits as Bethel Park defeated the Indians, 2-0, in a Section 4-AAAA game.
Rachel Albert had a two-run double in the second inning for the Black Hawks (3-1, 4-3) to account for the game’s only runs.
Kellyn Perich was the losing pitcher Peters Township (1-3, 4-4) despite allowing just five hits and striking out 12.
• Winning pitcher Erica Burns scattered four hits and struck out 13 as Carmichaels remained unbeaten in Section 2-AA with a 10-0 six-inning victory over Washington.
Natalie McNett and Emily Lewis each doubled for the Mikes (5-0, 5-2), who scored in five of the six innings.
Morgan Bainer and losing pitcher Taylor Ellis each doubled for Washington (0-6, 1-6).
• Casey Hite pitched a four-hitter and Micaela Danley hit a bases-loaded triple in Bentworth’s six-run fifth inning as the Bearcats defeated Brownsville 7-1 in Section 2-AA.
The win keeps Bentworth (5-2, 7-4) in contention for the section title. Brownsville, which upset second-place McGuffey Monday, fell to 2-4, 2-5.
Danley went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Autumn Zgorlinski was 2-for-3 with two RBI for Bentworth.
• Kaitlyn Dittrich pitched a three-inning no-hitter and Kassie Kesneck hit a home run as Chartiers-Houston continued rolling with a 19-0 victory over visiting Avella in Section 1-A.
Dittrich struck out three and held Avella to one baserunner. Kesneck hit her home run in the first inning and the Bucs (4-0, 8-1) scored 14 runs in the second inning. Jalynn Myers and Kayla Alderson each doubled. Chartiers-Houston has won eight in a row.
Avella’s record dipped to 1-3 in section and 2-4 overall.
• Bailey Bennington hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and drove in six runs as West Greene defeated Clay Battelle, W.Va., 11-3, in a non-section game.
Winning pitcher Madison Renner, who struck out 11, also homered for the Pioneers (6-3), who jumped out to an 8-0 lead through three innings.
