H.S. Softball: Big Macs fall short
Abbi Nanheh and winning pitcher Lauren Garcia both homered as John Marshall, W.Va., handed Canon-McMillan its first loss of the season, 8-7, in a non-section high school girls softball game Wednesday.
Razyn Schultz added a double for John Marshall.
Linda Rush and Abby McCartney both homered for the Big Macs (7-1), while Taylor Hopkins and Taylor Bruno added doubles.
• Katie Tarr homered and struck out 13 to lead Burgettstown past Avonworth, 11-2, in a Section 1-AA game.
Shania Winters hit a pair of homers for the Blue Devils (3-0, 8-1), while Caley Ritts tripled.
Losing pitcher Amy Smith homered and tripled for Avonworth (1-2, 1-2).
• Moriah McGuier outdueled Abby Gustovich as McGuffey defeated Beth-Center, 5-1, in a Section 2-AA game.
McGuier scattered four hits and struck out 11 for the Highlanders (4-1, 4-1), while Rachel Kleinhans, Chelsea Travis and Sammie Weiss all doubled.
Gustovich also allowed just four hits but took the loss for Beth-Center (1-4, 1-4), which got two hits, including a double, from Ally Trippy.
• Alysa Fairman fired a one-hitter and also doubled as Thomas Jefferson handed Ringgold a 13-1, five-inning Section 3-AAA loss.
Rachel Bowers, Emily Scheider and Lacie Lautner also doubled for TJ (4-2, 6-4).
Cara Richards took the loss for Ringgold (0-6, 1-7), which got an RBI double in the first inning from Lauen Gohacki.
• Madison Ludrosky struck out seven and drove in two runs to lead Jefferson-Morgan past Mapletown, 5-2, in a Section 1-A game.
Ludrosky hit one of six doubles for the Rockets (4-1, 6-2), who scored four runs in the first inning. Madison Dupont and Brooke Diamond both had an RBI for J-M, which committed four errors.
The Maples (2-3, 4-3) had just three hits and scored both of its runs in the fifth inning.
• Ashley Iagnemma surpassed 500 strikeouts for her career with seven and South Fayette held on for a 4-2 victory over Chartiers Valley in a Section 2-AAA game.
Sara Jubas hit an inside-the-park home run for the Lions (2-3, 7-5), who snapped a two-game losing streak. The Colts (3-1, 4-2) were held to four hits.
• Morgan Vickless went 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBI to lift Bentworth over Washington, 16-4, in a Section 2-AA game.
Casey Hite earned the victory for the Bearcats (6-2, 8-4) with four strikeouts and allowed just five hits.
Maliyah Spencer and Taylor Ellis hit home runs for the Prexies (0-7, 1-7).
• Tiffany Markovitch earned the victory and hit two doubles as Brownsville defeated Charleroi, 9-3, in a Section 2-AA game.
The Falcons (3-4, 3-5) used a four-run fourth inning to take control, despite allowing 12 hits. Cheyenne Wasko hit a home run for Brownsville.
Charleroi (2-3, 3-4) committed three errors.
