Baseball roundup: Bethany knocks Waynesburg out of PAC lead
Fort Cherry High School graduate Matt Shaffer went 4-for-6 and drove in a pair of runs as last-place Bethany knocked Waynesburg out of a tie for first place in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference with a 10-9 victory Friday.
After Waynesburg scored seven runs in the first three innings, three Bethany releivers allowed just two more runs over the final six innings as the Bison improved to 2-13 in conference play and 6-19 overall.
Nathan Mori and Matt Bensinger had three hits each for Waynesburg (11-4, 13-13-1).
• Matt Peters went 4-for-4 with three RBI and a home run to help California to a 9-5 victory over Pitt-Johnstown at Point Stadium and salvage a split of a PSAC West Division doubleheader.
Chris Wastchak also homered for Cal (12-10, 18-18) in the nightcap and winning pitcher Jack Dennis threw a complete game.
UPJ (6-15-1, 6-32-1) won the opener 6-4, breaking a tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Will Kaufman tripled and David Marcus doubled for Cal. UPJ’s Dillon Byer drove in three runs, including the game-winner with a triple in the sixth.
