Baseball: Let’s play 3? W&J swept in tripleheader

Playing a rare tripleheader Saturday, Washington & Jefferson dropped all three PAC games by one run at Thomas More, 4-3, 1-0 and 5-4. The latter was an eight-inning game in which W&J held a four-run lead in the sixth.

Thomas More improved to 14-3 in the league and 22-7 overall. W&J is 10-7, 18-10.

The middle game saw Thomas More score a run in the bottom of the first and the Saints led the rest of the way.

Derek Helbing and Jake Gordon each had three hits on the day for W&J.

Waynesburg swept a PAC doubleheader at Bethany, 4-2 and 9-8.

The Yellow Jackets’ Brian Resnik pitched a four-hitter in the opener, striking out 12. Waynesburg scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning with two coming on a single by Nathan Mori.

Waynesburg (13-4, 15-13-1) had an early 7-2 lead in the second game before Bethany tied the score. The Yellow Jackets scored the go-ahead run on a dropped third strike in the sixth inning and Ben Shorthouse followed with a run-scoring double.

• California defeated Pitt-Johnstown 10-2 in the opening game of a PSAC West doubleheader at Consol Energy Park before falling in the second game, 20-8.

Chris Wastchak homered for the second day in a row and drove in four runs in the opener for Cal (13-11, 19-19). Winning pitcher GJ Senchak scattered 10 hits in a complete-game win.

UPJ (7-16-1, 7-33-1) scored 10 runs in the second inning and seven more in the fourth of the nightcap. Mason Prickett homered and drove in seven runs.
