Wild Things add Shady Side Academy graduate
Tim Giel, a graduate of Shady Side Academy and a formerNew York Yankees pitching prospect, signed with the Wild Things.
Giel, a resident of Gibsonia, signed with the Yankees as an undrafted free agent in 2013. The hard-throwing right-hander pitched two seasons in the Yankees system.
Last season, Giel pitched for Staten Island, the Yankees Class A Short-Season affiliate in the New York Penn League. In 18 games with Staten Island, he had a 1-1 record with a 4.65 ERA in 31 innings. As a rookie with the Yankees in 2013, he started the season with the Gulf Coast League Yankees and had a 2.18 ERA in 15 games.
In 2012, Giel competed in the Cape Cod League for the Bourne Braves and was named a Cape Cod League All-Star
Over the course of his four-year career at Columbia University, Giel was 10-9 with a 4.03 ERA in 190 innings. His senior season was his most impressive. He had a 3-3 record with a 3.20 ERA in 64 2/3 innings. He also recorded 51 strikeouts, his highest total in a single season earning him an All-Ivy honorable mention.
Giel had an outstanding high school career at Shady Side. As a senior, he was named the Western Pennsylvania Class AA Pitcher of the Year and was a two-time MVP and two-time all-section selection. He set numerous school records, including career wins, career strikeouts, single-season strikeouts and lowest opponents’ batting average.
The Wild Things open the 2015 season against the Frontier League reigning champions, the Schaumburg Boomers, Friday, May 15 at 7:05 p.m.
