Local student-athletes to be honored for academics
Every year, the Tri-County Athletic Directors’ Association honors 10 high school student-athletes with scholarships. These athletes have not only performed well on the athletic fields but also excelled in the classroom.
Five boys and five girls will be honored at the Coach of the Year Banquet, which will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at the DoubleTree by Hilton in the Meadow Lands.
Tickets for the banquet are $35 each and are on sale at Washington High School, 201 Allison Ave., Washington, PA, 15301. Reservations can be made by calling athletic director Joe Nicolella at 724-223-5085, ext. 2091. All proceeds from the banquet benefit Special Olympics.
The 10 honorees:
A four-year letterman in football, basketball and track, Jackson is a member of the National Honor Society, Quarterbacks for Life and Young Life. He is a four-time recipient of the West Greene Scholar Athlete Award. Jackson is headed to West Virginia University for football and will major in athletic training.
Brumbaugh is a four-year letterman in football and basketball. He was named Class AA Player of the Year by the Pennsylvania Football Sports Writers and was first-team all-state. He carries a 3.5 grade-point average, belongs to Teen Institute, Future Business Leaders of America and the National Honor Society.
Paris was a four-year letterman and captain in football and baseball, and was named all-conference and All-WPIAL. He is a senior class president, a member of the National Honor Society, Senior High Chorus, Steel Drums and the newspaper staff. He will attend college (undecided) to study biology.
Hladycz earned 10 varsity letters: four in track, three in football, two in indoor track and one in wrestling. He made the honor roll all four years, is a member of the Ski Club and is a church volunteer with the youth group. He has a 3.61 GPA and plans on attending Edinboro University.
A four-year letterwinner in football and track, Whalen is a three-time all-conference player in football at three different positions. He is a three-time qualifier for the WPIAL Track Championships. Whalen has a 3.8 GPA, is a member of the National Honor Society and president of the Drama Club and Powerlifing Club.
A four-sport standout, Muccioli has earned 12 varsity letters from volleyball, softball, basketball and track. She has also participated in dance, gymnastics and youth soccer. She is vice president of her class, co-president of the Interact Club and Ecology Club. She is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and co-chair of Relay for Life. She carries a 4.770 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Hilton has earned 12 varsity letters from indoor track (4), outdoor track (4), soccer (3) and cross country (1). She carries a 4.3 grade-point average and has made the Highest Honor Roll since she was a freshman. Hilton is a member of Student Government and the National Honor Society.
Kesneck has accumulated 12 varsity letters, four each in softball, cheerleading and volleyball. She was all-section in softball and volleyball and was part of the team that won the WPIAL Spirit (cheerleading) title the past two years. She is a member of SADD, the Leo Club, National Honor Society, the newspaper staff, and editor of the yearbook. She carries a 4.29 GPA and will attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Lucas is a three-time varsity letterwinner in both indoor and outdoor track. She also has an extensive background in gymnastics, where she is a multi-gold medalist. Lucas is class president, a member of the National Honor Society and co-chair of Relay for Life. She carries a 3.80 GPA and is a member of the Debate and Academic teams. She plans to study economics in college.
A four-year letterwinner in softball and three-year letterwinner in rifle, Rush was named all-section and all-district in softball. She holds a 4.30 GPA, is a member of National Honor Society, and serves as Student Council president. She is also a member of the Leo Club. Rush will attend Seton Hill and continue her softball career.
