Baseball: Bowlen’s 11 strikeouts lift Mikes

Billy Bowlen pitched a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts and drove in the go-ahead run in the fourth inning Thursday as Carmichaels won a pitchers’ duel with West Greene, defeating the Pioneers 5-2 in Section 1-A.

Carmichaels had only five hits but Bowlen, a junior, had a run-scoring single in the Mikes’ two-run fourth inning that broke a 1-1 tie.

Carmichaels remains in third place in the section at 4-2. The Mikes are 8-2 overall.

• Brian Dabney struck out seven and did not allow a run in Montour’s 7-0 victory over McGuffey in Section 3-AAA.

Trent Vietmeier had a double for Montour (3-2, 7-5). Matt Novak went 2-for-2 for McGuffey (0-6, 0-11).

• Brownsville defeated visiting Washington, 11-0, in a game for first place in Section 2-AA.

Brownsville is 6-0 in the section and 9-1 overall. Wash High is 6-1, 6-2. The teams are scheduled to meet again today at Washington Park.
