Baseball: Peters Twp. rallies late, walks off with win
Alex Mundy raced home from third base with the winning run on Tim Swoope’s two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning, capping Peters Township’s 5-4 come-from-behind win over visiting Bethel Park Friday night in Section 5-AAAA.
The win keeps Peters Township (3-5, 8-7) in playoff contention and moves the Indians to within a half-game of fourth-place Bethel Park (3-4, 5-5).
PT trailed 4-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, when it scored three runs. Frank Jezioro had a two-run double and came around to score on a single by Ethan Anderson.
After winning pitcher Phil Mary, who struck out eight, held BP scoreless in the top of the seventh, the Indians won the game with two runs in the bottom half.
Adam Cisney drew a leadoff walk but the next two batters struck out. Mundy then tied the score at 4-4 with a run-scoring double. Jezioro was intentionally walked and Brett McIntosh followed with a single through the left side of the infield but Mundy had to hold at third base.
With the bases loaded, Swoope singled between the shortstop and third baseman to drive in Mundy with the game-winning run.
• Aaron Previsky hit a double and three-run home run to drive in five runs in California’s 11-1 five-inning win over Jefferson-Morgan in Section 1-A.
Chris Swartz tossed three innings and was the winning pitcher, his 4th of the year for Cal (6-0, 12-1). Nate Luketich went 3-for-3 with a double.
Austin Clark had an RBI single for J-M (3-4, 4-7).
• Jake Riton’s RBI-single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh gabe Chartiers Valley a 2-1 victory over McGuffey in a Section 3-AAA game.
Spence Carlson struck out eight for CV (6-1, 10-3). Dakota Wilkinson scored on an error for the runfor McGuffey (0-7, 0-12).
• Kyle McLaughlin had a double and three RBI to help South Side Beaver defeat Fort Cherry 12-2 in a five-inning game in Section 1-AA.
Jarred Hozak struck out 10 for SSB (7-2, 8-4). Fort Cherry fell to 2-6 and 3-6.
• Waynesburg scored four times in the final three innings to get past Frazier, 4-2, in a Section 2-AA game.
Hunter Robinson and Joel Rohanna each went 2-for-3 with two doubles for the Raiders (5-3, 6-4). Nick Fox went 3-for-4 with a double.
Frazier fell to 0-10, including 0-7 in the section.
• West Allegheny scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away and defeat Trinity 6-1 in a Section 3-AAA game.
Winning pitcher Tyler Eritz limited Trinity (1-6, 2-11) to three hits over six innings.
Danny Guilfoil and Bradon Pouch doubled for WA (5-1, 9-3), which is a half-game behind first-place Chartiers Valley.
• Bentworth remained in sole possession of second place in Section 1-A by winning 11-0 in five innings at Mapletown.
Bentworth is 5-1 in the section and 8-2 overall. The Bearcats have one game remaining against first-place California, at home, next Friday.
Mapletown (0-7, 0-9) has not held an opponent to single-digit runs all season and is giving up an average of 14 runs per game.
• Charleroi forged an early three-run lead and held off visiting Beth-Center 7-5 in Section 2-AA.
Charleroi improved to 2-5 in the section and 3-7 overall. Beth-Center fell to 2-5, 3-6. The Bulldogs have lost four in a row.
