College baseball: Waynesburg wins slugfest over W&J
It was a bad day to be a pitcher in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference game between Washington & Jefferson and host Waynesburg. The teams combined for 28 runs and 35 hits before Waynesburg pulled out an 18-10 win.
The victory keeps Waynesburg (15-4, 17-13-1) a game behind PAC leader Thomas More, which swept Saint Vincent. W&J slipped to 11-8 in the conference and 19-11 overall.
Ben Miller hit a home run and drove in four runs for Waynesburg, Cameron Bernhardt was 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI and Ben Shorthouse was 4-for-6.
Cory Bauer and Jake Gordon each hit a home run for W&J.
Waynesburg led 14-3 after five innings, but W&J scored five times in the top of the eight to pull to within 16-10. The Yellow Jackets scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Jacob Meyer was the winning pitcher.
• Mick Fennell hit a two-run homer down the right-field line in the bottom of the fifth inning to give California a 3-2 win over Clarion and a split of their PSAC West Division doubleheader at Consol Energy Park.
Clarion (6-20, 8-25) won the opening game 9-4.
Cal trailed 2-1 when Fennell, who had doubled earlier in the game, homered in the nightcap. Jack Dennis was the winning pitcher, improving his record to 4-1. He threw a complete game.
