Baseball: W&J sweeps Waynesburg with 2 shutouts
One day after losing to rival Waynesburg in a slugfest, Washington & Jefferson used stellar pitching Saturday to sweep a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader from the Yellow Jackets, 1-0 and 7-0, at Ross Memorial Park.
The sweep moves W&J’s record to 13-8 in the conference and 21-11 overall. Waynesburg falls to 15-6, 17-15-1.
W&J’s Riley Groves and Waynesburg’s Brian Resnik hooked up in a pitchers’ duel in the opener. Each threw a four-hitter but Groves tossed his third shutout of the season and W&J scratched out a run in the third inning.
The Presidents’ Michael Ruffin hit a double and came around to score the game’s only run on two groundouts.
Groves struck out seven and did not allow a Waynesburg player to reach scoring position. Resnik struck out four.
In the second game, W&J scored three runs in the third inning and Nick Vento capped a four-run fifth with a three-run homer.
Winning pitcher Jared Baird scattered eight hits and struck out eight. Nathan Mori had three hits for Waynesburg.
• California swept a PSAC West Division doubleheader from host Clarion, 8-2 and 5-2.
G.J. Senchak and Mick Fennell combined on a six-hitter in the opener, and Cal hit five doubles in the second game.
Matt Peters had three hits in the opener, and David Marcus and Kris Fielding each drove in two runs for the Vulcans (16-12, 24-20). Alex Ziegler was the winning pitcher in relief in the second game.
Clarion is 6-22, 8-27.
