Johnson finishes 2nd in triple jump at Penn Relays
Auburn junior Shawn Johnson, a Canon-McMillan graduate, placed second Saturday in the triple jump at the Penn Relays held at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field.
Johnson’s best jump was 53-2¼, which gave him the lead entering the sixth and final round. Florida’s Marquis Dendy then knocked Johnson out of first place with a jump of 54-4½.
Wake Forest junior Jessie Merckle, a Fort Cherry graduate and former PIAA champion, placed third in the women’s javelin Thursday with a toss of 161-4, which came on her fourth of six throws.
Fawn Miller of Florida won the javelin with a throw of 172-11.
Pitt’s Dustin Fuller, a Wash High graduate, placed 18th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.44. He also competed on the Panthers’ 800-meter relay team that placed 20th in 1:27.8. Alyssa Wise, also of Pitt and Wash High, ran the anchor leg for the women’s team in the 800 relay. Pitt also placed 20th in that event with a time of 1:37.65.
