Softball: Burgettstown clinches tie for section title

Burgettstown continued its rise in WPIAL Class AA Tuesday with a 6-2 victory over Avonworth to clinch at least a share of the Section 1-AA title.

The Blue Devils (9-0, 16-1), who won 15 consecutive games, can clinch a section championship with a win Thursdsay over second-place South Side Beaver. Caley Ritts went 2-for-3 with two singles and three RBI, while Kate Tarr had 12 strikeouts.

• McGuffey hit three home runs to back Moriah McGuier’s seven strikeouts as the Highlanders secured a key, 14-1 victory over Bentworth in Section 2-AA.

Carae Wagner hit a grand slam and drove in six runs for McGuffey (9-1, 10-1), which had 19 hits and clinched a spot in the WPIAL Class AA playoffs. Sammie Weiss and Emily Irey also hit two-run home runs. It was Weiss’ first varsity homer.

Bentworth (7-5, 10-7) committed five errors and scored its only run in the third inning.

• Ashley Iagnemma struck out five, allowed just one hit and drove in two runs to lead South Fayette past Montour, 10-0, in a five-inning Section 2-AAA game.

Corton Blocker went 4-for-4 with a double and 4 RBI, while Sara Jubas had a triple, drove in two and scored three times for the Lions (5-4, 10-6).

Montour (4-5, 5-9) was shutout for the fourth time this season.

• Maddie Ludrosky struck out 15, had two hits and drove in two runs to lift Jefferson-Morgan past West Greene, 8-0, in a Section 1-A game.

Morgan Simkovic went 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs for the Rockets (8-1, 10-2), who are tied with Chartiers-Houston for first place. Ludrosky had a no-hitter through four innings and struck out every West Greene (6-4, 10-5) starter at least once.

Bailey Bennington struck out seven for the Pioneers.

• Hannah Gibbons’ bat propelled Waynesburg with 4 RBI and the Raiders held off a late rally to defeat Brownsville, 14-13, in a Section 2-AA game.

Gibbons, a Penn recruit, went 4-for-5 with 4 RBI, including a solo home run. Tara Staley also went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI for Waynesburg (4-6, 5-10). Tiffany Ross also had three RBI.

Cheyenne Wasko had a double, two two-run home runs and five RBI for the Falcons (6-6, 6-7).

• Canon-McMillan exploded for 16 runs in the third inning to defeat Carrick, 16-1, in a three-inning Section 4-AAAA game.

Linda Rush hit a three-run home run, Abby McCartney had a triple with two RBI, Kayla Hopkins hit two doubles with two RBI and Brittney Crawford added two RBI for the Big Macs (9-1, 11-2), who have won four straight.

Carrick (0-10, 0-12) committed three errors and had just two hits.

• Mapletown committed 11 errors, but the Maples scored five runs in the sixth inning to complete a come-from-behind, 10-7, win over Fort Cherry in a Section 1-A game.

Jordan Adams had 3 RBI and Mackenzie Cree went 2-for-4 on senior night for Mapletown (4-5, 6-5), which had 10 hits.

Riley Carter hit a solo home run for the Rangers (1-8, 1-10).

• Erica Burns struck out 12 and walked two to help Carmichaels to a 2-1 win over Charleroi in a Section 2-AA game.

Katie Mays had a double and knocked in a run in the first inning for Carmichaels (10-1, 10-3). Megan Walker had the other RBI in the third.

Sydney Toth drove in the run for Charleroi (3-7, 4-10) with a single in the sixth.

• Abby Gustovich tripled and had two RBI to pace Beth-Center to a 5-0 win over Washington in Section 2-AA.

Gustovich struck out seven and walked one for the Bulldogs (5-7, 5-7).

Taylor Ellis struck out five for Wash High (0-11, 1-12).
