Baseball: Canon-Mac moving on to playoffs

Canon-McMillan clinched a WPIAL playoff berth Wednesday by defeating visiting Carrick 10-1 on the Big Macs’ Senior Day.

Clay Martin pitched a five-hitter and struck out six as the Big Macs improved to 7-3 in Section 5-AAAA and 10-4 overall. Drew Wuenstel led C-M at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Jared Beach was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI and Hunter Stouden hit a double.

• Jacob Kinsell pitched a three-hit shutout and Michael Blasinsky hit a home run as Carmichaels blanked visiting Bentworth 4-0 in a Section 1-A.

The win by Carmichaels (6-2, 10-2) moved the Mikes to within a half-game of Bentworth (7-2, 10-3) in the battle for second place. The Mikes’ win also eliminated fourth-place Jefferson-Morgan from playoff contention.

Kinsell, a junior, struck out seven and issued only one walk. Carmichales gave Kinsell the only run he would need when it scored in the third inning on an infield single by Jacob Wamsley. Blasinsky then delivered a three-run homer in the fifth inning.

• Garrett Briant pitched a gem for Trinity as the Hillers blanked Montour 1-0, at Consol Energy Park.

Briant pitched a complete-game two-hitter with three strikeouts as the Hillers (3-6, 4-11) won their second in a row. Montour (5-4, 9-7) still holds third place and the final playoff spot from the section.

Briant, who did not allow a Montour player to reach third base, outdueled the Spartans’ highly touted sophomore Trent Vietmeier, who also threw a two-hitter. Vietmeier struck out 11.

Trinity scored the game’s only run in the fourth inning when Dom Neff’s doubnle drove in Briant.

• Hunter Robinson had 12 strikeouts to help Waynesburg down Chartiers-Houston 4-1 in a Section 2-AA game.

Waynesburg moved to 9-4, including 8-3 in the section. The loss knocked Chartiers-Houston (5-5, 5-8) out of the playoffs.

Robinson also went 3-for-4 and Colton Higgins doubled. Braden Boosel went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases.

Matt Whitfield doubled for C-H.

• Drake Bower pitched a shutout and South Fayette moved closer to the .500 mark with an 8-0 victory over visiting McGuffey in Section 3-AAA.

The win keeps South Fayette (4-5, 6-7) in playoff contention. Bower struck out 10, J.J. Walker had a double and Logan Sharp was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs during the Lions’ six-run sixth inning.

Matt Chambers doubled and Dakota Wilkinson had two of McGuffey’s hits.

• Freedom broke open a close game with a seven-run sixth inning and defeated visiting Fort Cherry 13-3 in Section 1-AA.

Timmy Hampe had a big game for Freedom (4-7, 6-8). Hampe was the winning pitcher, throwing a five-hitter. He also went 4-for-4 with three RBI. Bradley Eckman doubled and drove in four runs and Zach Greene doubled.

Nick Cook had a double for Fort Cherry (3-8, 4-9).

• Austin Clark struck out 14 to pace Jefferson-Morgan to a 2-1 win over West Greene in a Section 2-A game.

David Blaker triple and scored on a single by Joseph Headlee in the second inning for the Rockets (4-5, 6-8). Clark had a solo home run in the first.

West Greene fell to 3-11, 1-8 in the section.

• Santino Paris had a two-run triple in a three-run top of the seventh to give Avella a 6-2 victory over Bishop Canevin in a Section 5-A game.

Paris and Nick Kusich also doubled for Avella (2-6, 5-7).

• Sam Hockenberry had two doubles and three RBI to lead Burgettstown to a 9-5 victory over South Side Beaver in a Section 1-AA game.

Dylan Dajns went 3-for-3 with a double and RBI for Burgettstown (4-8, 6-8).

Kyle McLaughlin had a triple and two RBI and Jake Berger a triple for SS Beaver (7-5, 8-7).

• Washington top four hitters went 10-for-12 and drove in 10 runs in a 13-0, five-inning win over Frazier in a Section 2-AA game.

Jordan Mooney went 4-for-4 with two doubles and six RBI for the Prexies (8-2, 8-3). Connor Anderson had a triple and Isiah Perry a double. Jonathan Spina and Jordan West each went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Connor Bedillion struck out seven in three innings.

Frazier is 0-9 and 0-13.

• Austin Kitchen took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Mt. Lebanon came away with a 2-0 victory over Peters Township in Section 5-AAAA.

Kitchen struck out eight and walked two for the Blue Devils (11-0, 14-1). Kitchen and Vince D’Orazio each had a double and the Blue Devils scored an unearned run in the first and sixth innings.

Phil Mary was the hard-luck loser, striking out four and walking three for PT (4-6, 10-8). He also broke up the no-hitter with a single to ead off the seventh.
