GAINESVILLE, Va. – Strong play at the PGA Tour’s Quicken Loans National helped push Steve Wheatcroft up the leaderboard and past $800,000 in earnings this year.

While the talk of the event was Troy Merritt sharing the lead with Kevin Chappell entering Sunday’s final round, Wheatcroft quietly strung together eight birdies, shooting a 3-under-par 71 for the day and finishing the event with a 10-under-par 274 to finish tied for 11th. The strong finish earned the Trinity High School graduate $147,400 of the $6.7 million purse.

Wheatcroft started the day with bogeys on two of the first four holes before four consecutive birdies. Though he added three bogeys on the back-9, Wheatcroft added four more birdies. The 37-year-old has earned 459 points in the FedEx Cup standings this season and his annual earnings are now $817,109. It was his fourth top 25 finish in 2015.

Merritt walked to the final tee with a three-shot lead and slapped hands with fans on both sides of the ropes, knowing he had all but wrapped up his first PGA Tour title.

Merritt shot a 4-under 67 on Sunday and finished his first career victory in 96 starts with a flourish, rolling in a 34-foot putt for birdie on the 72nd hole. After the putt fell, he raised his hands, looked toward the crowd and shrugged his shoulders, as if to say that it was the perfect way to finish.

The victory came a day after Merritt soared to the lead with a tournament-record 61, and his closing 67 matched the best of the day on another sweltering afternoon. He finished at 18-under 266.

Park wins Women’s British Open: Inbee Park rallied to win the Women’s British Open to become the seventh women to win four different major championships.

The top-ranked South Korean player closed with a 7-under 65 at Turnberry for a three-stroke victory over compatriot Jin Young Ko. Park finished at 12-under 276.

Perry defends 3M title: Kenny Perry successfully defended his 3M Championship title, shooting a 4-under 68 for a four-stroke victory over Bernhard Langer, Scott Dunlap and Kevin Sutherland.

Rohanna finishes tied for 22nd: Waynesburg High School graduate Rachel Rohanna bounced back in the Symetra Tour’s PHC Classic Sunday, shooting a 1-over-par 73 to finish the event tied for 22nd with eight other golfers.

Rohanna, who ranks eighth on the tour’s money list, hadfour bogeys, but her two birdies on the back 9 salvaged the round. She hit only six of 13 fairways.

Meanwhile, Annie Park won the event in a three-hole playoff against Lee Lopez.

The two golfers both shot a 5-under-par 211 before tying in back-to-back playoff rounds. Park prevailed with a birdie to eliminate Lopez and win her second professional event.
