C-M hires coach for baseball

The Canon-McMillan School Board approved Timothy Bruzdewicz as head varsity baseball coach at a special meeting Thursday night.
Bruzdewicz, 47, replaces Frank Zebrasky, whose position was opened in June after leading the Big Macs to three consecutive WPIAL Class AAAA playoff appearances, including back-to-back trips to the quarterfinals. Bruzdewicz spent last season as an assistant coach at West Allegheny under head coach Bryan Cornell. The Indians went 17-7 last spring with a trip to the WPIAL Class AAA championship, where they lost to eventual state champion Knoch, and the PIAA quarterfinals.
He graduated from Allegheny College as one of the most decorated pitchers in program history. A two-time NCAA Division III All-American, Bruzdewicz was the 1988 NCAC Pitcher of the Year and held several NCAC records, including career strikeouts (266) and single-season strikeouts (119). The 6-0, 185-pound lefty was drafted in the 18th round of the 1988 draft by the Toronto Blue Jays and spent two seasons in affiliated ball.
In 1988, Bruzdewicz appeared in 21 games for Medicine Hat of the Pioneer League. He was promoted to Myrtle Beach of the Class A South Atlantic League in 1989 before moving moving to Dunedin in the Class A Florida State League. His minor-league career ended there with a 5-10 record, a 4.09 ERA and 81 strikeouts.
A group of Canon-McMillan baseball players were suspended last spring for allegedly using marijuana during the team’s trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. Zebrasky was suspended for three games while the district investigated the matter, and the Big Macs improved steadily after his return, winning six consecutive games to earn a spot in the WPIAL playoffs.
Canon-McMillan lost to Shaler, 4-1, in the first round and Zebrasky was informed prior to the June board meeting that his position would be opened. The board also opened his job of head girls basketball coach.
A girls basketball coach was not hired Thursday night. The school board has an agenda meeting scheduled for Aug. 13 and a regular board meeting Aug. 20.
