Scott named head wrestling coach at North Carolina
Three-time PIAA wrestling champion Coleman Scott, a Waynesburg High School graduate, was officially named head wrestling coach at the University of North Carolina Thursday morning.
Scott, a four-time All-American at Oklahoma State, served as interim head coach since June and becomes the program’s sixth head coach. He joined North Carolina as an assistant in 2014.
“When I got into coaching I knew immediately I wanted to be a head coach one day,” Scott, 29, said in a news release. “I am thankful for the opportunity that Bubba Cunningham and the University of North Carolina have given me. I had the opportunity to learn from the best under John Smith at Oklahoma State. He showed me what it takes to win on and off the mat and that’s what we will do here at UNC.”
The 2008 NCAA National Champion at 133 pounds, Scott has also excelled at the international level as a four-time member of the United States National Team. He won a bronze medal in freestyle wrestling at 60 kg at the 2012 London Olympics.
Scott’s finished his career at Waynesburg with a 156-12 record and four WPIAL championships.
“I am pleased to announce Coleman Scott as our new head wrestling coach,” North Carolina Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham said. “His energy and enthusiasm for the job is contagious and will play a key role in returning the program to the level of success it has achieved in the past. Coleman will develop his student-athletes on a personal level and coach the whole student while providing them with the tools to succeed in life beyond athletics. In addition to his work with our current students, his focus will be to recruit outstanding young men to Carolina.”
