Peters Township junior Mia Kness sits atop the leaderboard of the Pennsylvania State Women’s Amateur Championship after shooting a 1-over-par 74 in round one at Sewickley Heights Golf Club Monday.

Kness shot a 37 on the front- and back-9. Canon-McMillan graduate Lauren Waller, the defending WPIAL Class AAA champion, is in second place with a 2-over-par 75. Match play begins today with Kness teeing off against Lisa Poritz of Hershey at 10:08 a.m. and Waller begins a round against Katerina Luttner of Pittsburgh at 10:40 a.m. The tournament concludes Friday with the head-to-head final.

Kness won the PIAA Class AAA southern qualifier and tied for third as a sophomore when she shot a 8-over 152 at the PIAA Girls Class AAA Golf Championships at Heritage Hills Country Club in York last fall.

Waller, who finished second at the PIAA championships as a senior and won two WPIAL titles, will golf at Penn State this fall.
