Wild Things drop two to Beach Bums
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Kramer Champlin threw a five-hit shutout and the Traverse City Beach Bums defeated the Wild Things 3-0 in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday. Willi Ramos drove in three runs in the nightcap, to give the Beach Bums a 4-2 win in second game and a sweep.
Champlin (9-6) walked only one batter, struck out six and did not allow a Washington baserunner past second base.
The Beach Bums (51-33) scored a single run in the third inning and two in the fourth off Washington starter Luke Wilkins (7-4), who also threw a complete game.
Doubles by Jake Rhodes and Jeff DeBlieux gave Traverse City a 1-0 lead. Brandon Jacobs doubled in the fourth, driving in Jose Vargas. Jacobs scored when Yazy Arbelo singled.
Shortstop Austin Wobrock was 2-for-3 with a double for Washington.
In the nightcap, Jose Vargas and Ramos both homered to help Traverse City get the win despite being outhit, 9-5.
Tim Giel took the loss for Washington (38-48), which got RBI from Austin Wobrock and Daniel Poma.
The Wild Things and Beach Bums each were awarded wins late Monday when the Frontier League commissioner Bill Lee ruled that Evansville must forfeit 10 wins for using an ineligible player. Washington was awarded two wins and Traverse City one. Evansville announced Tuesday that it is appealing Lee’s decision of the forfeits and a $1,500 fine to the league’s executive committee.
